Hydraulic flume

Weirs are overflow structures used to measure flow or to control the water elevation. In sharp crested weirs sharp edge in the crest causes the water to spring clear of the crest and thus accurate measurements can be made and results beneficial to tail end farms in a field channel. Hence, sharp crested weirs are used for experimentation. The research project was envisaged with the following objectives to develop sharp crested rectangular weirs with 30°, 45° and 60° edge angles.

Seawalls have been erected to protect hundreds of towns and tourism areas stretching along the coast of Vietnam. During storm surges or high tides, wave overtopping and splash-up would often threaten the safety of infrastructures, traffic and residents on the narrow land behind. Therefore, this study investigates these wave-wall interactions via hydraulic small scale model tests at Thuyloi University. Remarkably, the structure models were shaped to have different seaward faces and bullnoses.

Study on hydraulic stability and structural integrity of RAKUNA-IV armour units when randomly placed on the seaward slope of a rubble mound breakwater by means of experiments on physical models in a wave flume and simulations in mathematical models. The results of the research were later applied to a specific breakwater. Recommendations and solutions were thereby put forward for the design, production and construction of RAKUNA-IV armour units when applied to rubble mound breakwaters in reality.

The paper presents some results of a study based on the experiment carried out in Delta Flume of Delft Hydraulics. The analysis of time-series of sand concentration and velocity are implemented for regular and irregular waves with different conditions on wave and grain size.
