A study was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute’s greenhouse with 48 maize genotypes through hydroponic culture. Morphologically, plants behave differently in low phosphorus conditions than in normal phosphorus environments. Large augmented roots were found in the plant in low phosphorus conditions. The results revealed that chlorophyll contents, shoot length, root length shoot dry weight, root dry weight, leaf area, and root/shoot ratio might be considered critical traits for screening low phosphorus tolerant maize at the seedling stage.

Rice is one of the most suitable crop for saline soils although it is usually considered moderately sensitive to salinity. In this study, the phenotypic response of ten rice genotypes with salt stress at EC = 12dsm-1was assessed under hydroponic condition at seedling stage. The rice genotypes CSR-13 and CSR-30 showed highly tolerance to salinity; genotypes NDRK-5088, NUD-2, NUD-3, FL478 and CSR-90IR-2 were recorded moderately salinity tolerance and varieties NDR-359, IR-29 and IR-28 showed susceptibility to salinity.

The protected cultivation of cucumber in soilless systems (substrate culture, hydroponic, aeroponic etc.) under optimal operating microclimatic conditions has become an alternative for sustainable vegetable production as a result of shifting climatic scenarios and soil related problems. High distribution uniformity and low application rate, at frequent irrigation cycles, provide maximum control and monitoring of the wetted and aerated soil profile, which is essential for the shallow root system of the lettuce. Low application rate (3-5 mm/h): allows optimal absorption of water into the soil with no run-off, even on slopes. Protected cropping provides vegetable growers with an opportunity to enhance product quality and improve food safety. The overall objective of this project was to provide Vietnamese scientists and extension specialists with the training and tools to implement and foster regionally feasible improvements to current vegetable production practices and supply chains.
