Identification of dermatophytes

Dermatophytosis in calves is a major public and veterinary health concern worldwide because of its zoonotic potential and associated economic losses in cattle farms. However, this condition has lacked adequate attention; thus, to develop effective control measures, we determined ringworm prevalence, risk factors, and the direct-sample nested PCR diagnostic indices compared with the conventional methods of dermatophytes identification.

The main aim of this study to isolate and identify the fungi causing dermatophytosis. Also this study of dermatophytosis was carried out in the Department of Microbiology, KLE’S Dr. PrabhakarKore Hospital and Medical Research Centre Belgaum, over a Period of one year.

The present article reports on the laboratory examination of skin scraping sample collected from a camel clinically infected with dermatophyte infection. The samples were examined by direct microscopical examination by placing the skin scrapings and/or hairs in 20% KOH on a glass slide and gentle heating, without boiling. The dermatophyte identification was made based on the colony characteristics and microscopic features of the fungal isolates according to the methods. The present study revealed the presence of superficial dermatophyte skin infection in the affected camel.

In the present study 86 number of skin scrapings were collected from various breeds like Labrador retriever (n=32), German shepherd (n=21), Spitz (n=9), Dacshund (n=16), Mastiff (n=5), Boxer (n=3) and age groups from 6 months to, above 3 year with characteristics ring like lesions, alopecia, irregular patches of hair loss. All the dogs were presented to teaching veterinary clinical complex, Odisha veterinary college from December 2018 to June 2019.On routine identification of fungus out of 86 number of skin scrappings it was revealed that arthospores were present in 54 number of samples.

The dermatophytes are a group of closely related fungi that have the capacity to invade keratinized tissue (skin, hair, and nails) of humans and other animals to produce an infection. The clinical importance of identifying species of dermatophytes is to find out problem source of infection. Moreover, there are some prognostic considerations as well. The study was conducted at the Upgraded department of Microbiology, Osmania general hospital, Hyderabad.

Superficial mycoses are the most frequent forms of human infections, Dermatophytes affecting more than 20 to 25% of the world’s population. Dermatophytosis refers to superficial fungal infection of keratinized tissues, caused by group of keratinophilic dermatophytes. The prevalence of dermatophyte infection varies with different geographic area and climatic conditions. It is one of the common fungal infection but in recent times it is one of the neglected disease. The present study was aimed to assess the clinicomycological profile of dermatophytosis to identify the various infecting dermatophyte species and to compare clinical diagnosis with KOH microscopy and culture.
