Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene was carried out with multidentate nitrogenbased ligands, namely N,N’-bis[phenyl(pyrid-2-yl)methylene] ethane-1,2-diamine (BPDA) and N,N’-bis[methyl(pyrid2-yl)methylene] ethane-1,2-diamine (BMDA), and catalyst systems at catalyst/ligand molar ratios of 1/0.33, 1/0.5, 1/1, and 1/1.5 by using 2 different initiators, (1-bromoethyl)benzene (BEB) and ethyl-2-bromopropionate (EBP). Linear first-order kinetic plots were observed for ATRP of styrene upon using BPDA as a ligand with both initiators.

The reasonable shifts in FT-IR and NMR spectral signals of the complexes with respect to the free ligand confirm good coordination of the Schiff-base ligand with the metal through imine nitrogen and oxygen atoms of Schiff base moiety. The Schiff-base ligand and the complexes were screened for antimicrobial activity and fluorescent behaviour. From the analytical and spectral data, the stoichiometry was found to be 1:2 for all the complexes. An octahedral structure was proposed. All the complexes were found to be active against bacteria and fungi.

A series of pyrene-based salicylaldimine-type ligands containing n-octyl or cyclohexyl or phenyl groups at imine nitrogen group, 1-hydroxy-2-[(N-substituted-imino)methyl]-pyrenes (octyl 1, cyclohexyl 1b and phenyl 1c), were synthesized and characterized.

The analysis of IR, UV-vis, MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, COSY, and HSQC illustrated that HL1, HL2, HL3 were bidentate ligands and bound to the metal through the imine nitrogen and the net negatively charged sulfur in thiol form. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the chelating ligands in the Pt(II) complexes were in the trans configuration.
