Enterococcus faecium is a leading cause of hospital-acquired infection, particularly in the immunocompromised. Here, we use whole genome sequencing of E. faecium to study within-host evolution and the transition from gut carriage to invasive disease.

Bacteremia caused by Serratia rubidaea is seldom mentioned in comparison with other Enterobacteriaceae species. It primarily affects immunocompromised patients undergoing invasive procedures. Furthermore, the incidence, clinical features, and microbiological profile of this pathogen in the intensive care unit are rarely described.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by the Mucorales order of fungi. This fungus is commonly found in soil and can cause disease in immunocompromised patients. On the other hand, Bell’s palsy is an idiopathic condition that results in the sudden onset of unilateral facial muscle weakness, affecting the facial nerve.

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) is used as a standard adjuvant therapy for non-muscle invasive urothelial cancer. Most patients tolerate the treatment well, with mild side effects. Systemic complications are extremely rare, occur due to BCG dissemination and are associated with immunocompromised state and urothelial breach.

Nocardia are aerobic Gram-positive bacilli that can invade multiple organ systems, including the brain and lungs. It is most frequently found in patients who are immunocompromised. Invasive nocardial disease is a potentially life-threatening infection that can pose a diagnostic challenge.

This study aimed to understand and compare cancer incidence and risk in three patient groups: recipients of solid organ transplant (SOT) or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT); diagnosis of primary or secondary immunodeficiency disorder (PID/SID); and recipients of tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNF-i) therapy.

Cardiac lymphoma is a rare neoplasm involving heart, pericardium or both, usually seen in immunocompromised patients. We report a 61-year-old male presenting with worsening shortness of breath and 20-pound weight loss. Investigations showed right-sided tumor with interatrial septal wall perforation and left atrial expansion.

Pyomyositis is an uncommon acute bacterial infection of the skeletal muscle. It is sometimes referred to as “tropical pyomyositis” because it has been primarily reported as an endemic disease in tropical regions. In temperate climates, it is mainly diagnosed in immunocompromised persons, such as those with human immunodeficiency virus infection, malignancy, diabetes, and various other medical conditions.

Fusarium species are saprophytic fungi with a worldwide distribution. These fungi cause various infections among immunocompromised patients; however, they can also involve immunocompetent individuals.

Invasive pulmonary Aspergillus and invasive bronchial aspergillosis is a life-threatening opportunistic fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised hosts. In addition, since the patient was supported with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, we were able to perform safe bronchoscopic debridement of airway lesions and intratracheal instillation of liposomal amphotericin B.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving bridging procedure in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Official indications for ECMO are unclear for immunocompromised and HIV-positive patients affected by severe hypoxemia. Uncertainties are related to prognosis and efficacy of treatment of the underlying disease.

Surgery-related pain and opioids might exacerbate immune defenses in immunocompromised cancer patients which might affect postoperativd overall survival. Sufentanil is a good postoperative pain control drug, the present study aimed to figure out whether it effect T cell immunity in rat hepatocellular carcinoma surgical model.

We characterized the clinical features, radiographic characteristics, and response to treatment of immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and radiological profile of patients diagnosed with PC who received surgical resection between May 2015 and November 2020 in a tertiary referral center.

Non fermentors are important noscomial pathogens causing opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. They cause infections with patients having humidifiers, ventilators and catheter devices especially in medical intensive care units. To isolate identify in which age group, sex, risk factors of non fermentative gram negative bacteria The study was performed from September 2018 to February 2019 for a period of 6 months in Department of Microbiology& Medical Intensive Care Units. The samples were inoculated on Blood agar, Mac Conkey agar and incubated at 37℃ for overnight.

Pulmonary mucormycosis caused by Mucorales is a highly lethal invasive fungal infection usually found in immunocompromised patients. Isolated pulmonary mucormycosis in immunocompetent patients is very rare. Here, we present a case of a 32-year-old male who developed pulmonary mucormycosis without any known immunodeficiency.

Cutaneous involvement in aspergillosis is an uncommon entity. It usually occurs secondary to hematogenous spread from pulmonary infections in immunocompromised patients. Primary infection occurs at site of skin injury following trauma, burn, surgery or intravenous cannulation. As per literature, cutaneous aspergillosis is rarely seen in immunocompetent patients. Common causes reported for cutaneous aspergillosis are A. fumigatus and A. flavus. Here we report an unusual case of 25 years old immunocompetent male with primary cutaneous aspergillosis.

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is utilized for diagnosing lung infiltrates in immunocompromised. There is heterogeneity in the data and reported diagnostic yields range from 26 to 69%. Therefore, selection criteria for BAL to maximize yield and minimize complications are unclear.

Opportunistic infections, while well studied in the AIDS population, continue to have variable and surprising presentations. Here, we present a case of disseminated histoplasmosis with disseminated nontuberculous mycobacterial infection in a 50 year old man with long standing AIDS living in a non-endemic area.

Mortality after pneumonia in immunocompromised patients is higher than for immunocompetent patients. The use of non-invasive mechanical ventilation for patients with severe pneumonia may provide beneficial outcomes while circumventing potential complications associated with invasive mechanical ventilation.
