  • In this paper, we compare two types of commonly used wheel-track interaction models for wheel-rail impact problems, i.e., a beam and a continuum finite element model. We first reveal the differences between the impact forces predicted by the two models due to a typical rail squat using a time-frequency analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a suitable contact algorithm for BSMPM and then use it to investigate the contact force caused by impact. Some numerical examples are presented in this paper, the impact of two circular elastic disks and the impact of a soft circular disk into a stiffer rectangular block. All the results of contact force obtained from this study are compared with finite element results and perform a good agreement, the energy conservation is also considered.

  • This angle is considered as a harmonic oscillation function around the equilibrium position that is the initial angle of impact, and its angular frequency equals of the rivulet and the cable. The amplitude of impact angle of wind depends on wind velocity, initial position and that of rivulet. The assumption is verified by comparison with experimental results. The effects of rivulet oscillation components and aerodynamic forces are also discussed in this paper.

  • Since the dawn of civilisation human society has been shaped by its interaction with water—whether too much or too little. Indeed, water is one of the powerful forces of nature that have formed the planet on which we live. Floods are not new—they continually make news because of both tragic effects on individuals and acts of heroism in the emergency. The impact of floods on people can be dramatic even if there are no fatalities; pictures of rescue make good television material with stories told of bravery and fortunate escapes.

  • Characterizing the evolution of Internet topology is important to our understanding of the Internet architecture and its interplay with technical, economic and social forces. A major challenge in obtaining empirical data on topology evolution is to identify real topology changes from the observed topology changes, since the latter can be due to either topology changes or transient routing dynamics. In this paper, we formulate the topology liveness problem and propose a solution based on the analysis of BGP data.

  • Congress is considering a comprehensive overhaul of the nationżs immigration laws more than a decade after the enactment of strict immigration measures. Current U.S. immigration laws mandate deportation of lawful permanent resident (LPR) parents of thousands of U.S. citizen children, without providing these parents an opportunity to challenge their forced separations. Through a multi-disciplinary analysis, this policy brief examines the experiences of U.S. citizen children impacted by the forced deportation of their LPR parents and proposes ways to reform U.S.

  • Many critical survival issues are related to uneven development, poverty, and population growth. They all place unprecedented pressures on the planet's lands, waters, forests, and other natural resources, not least in the developing countries. The downward spiral of poverty and environmental degradation is a waste of opportunities and of resources. In particular, it is a waste of human resources. These links between poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation formed a major theme in our analysis and recommendations.
