  • In this paper, a traditional adjoint method is used to propagate ND uncertainty on reactivity and reactivity coefficients and estimate correlations between different states of the core. We show that neglecting those correlations induces a loss of information in the final uncertainty.

  • This study was conducted to fi nd out the relations between trawling speed and vertical opening of trawl net. The study uses a trawl model to perform a test in a flume tank at various trawling speeds, from 0.46 m/s to 1.08 m/s, this is equivalent from1.5 knots to 3.5 knots in the field for full-scale net.

  • Searching for a person name in a Web Search Engine usually leads to a number of web pages that refer to several people sharing the same name. In this paper we study whether it is reasonable to assume that pages about the desired person can be filtered by the user by adding query terms. Our results indicate that, although in most occasions there is a query refinement that gives all and only those pages related to an individual, it is unlikely that the user is able to find this expression a priori. ...

  • Recent approaches to text classi cation have used two di erent rst-order probabilistic models for classi cation, both of which make the naive Bayes assumption. Some use a multi-variate Bernoulli model, that is, a Bayesian Network with no dependencies between words and binary word features (e.g. Larkey and Croft 1996; Koller and Sahami 1997). Others use a multinomial model, that is, a uni-gram language model with integer word counts (e.g. Lewis and Gale 1994; Mitchell 1997).

  • Government size has attracted much scholarly attention. Political economists have considered large public expenditures a product of leftist rule and an ex- pression of a stronger representation of labor interest. Although the size of the government has become the most important policy difference between the left and the right in postwar politics, the formation of the government’s funding base has not been explored. Junko Kato finds that the differentiation of tax rev- enue structure is path-dependent upon the shift to regressive taxation.

  • When Claus-Dieter Ehlermann asked me in late December 2004 whether I would be willing to contribute to the 10th Annual Competition Law and Policy Workshop, I was not quite sure whether he was about to offer me a Christmas gift or another Dardanians’ present. 1 After all, the relationship between the protection of intellectual property and the maintenance of free competition is the subject of an age-old debate2 to which I had already con- tributed too much, with too little impact.

  • As we wrote in a previous preface, there are two main reasons for pro- ducing a new edition of a textbook. First, the subject may have moved on – this has certainly been true in the area of natural resource and envir- onmental economics. Second, experience in using the text may suggest areas for improvement. Both reasons warrant a third edition now. We will say nothing here about the ways in which the subject area has ‘moved on’ except to note that it has and that you will find those changes reflected in this new edition. As far as experience in the use of this text is concerned,...

  • By its geographical position, Mexico finds itself under a great variety of natural phenomena which can cause disasters, like earthquakes, eruptions, hurricanes, burning forest, floods and aridity (dryness). In case of disaster, the effects on financial and natural resources are huge and volatile. In Mexico the first risk to transfer is the seismic risk, because although it is the less recurrent, it has the biggest impact on the population and country. For example, an earthquake of magnitude 8.

In many cases, such groups will work with people inside the organization and plot to steal trade secrets or customer lists. Researchers can use extreme means to find out about operations or business plans.

  • One of the contributions of this study is to look not only at the impact of an overall measure of mental health, but also to look at how the different components of the GHQ measure relate to edu- cational attainment and the probability of moving into inactivity at an early age. We find strong patterns of association with re- spect to the overall measure, particularly for girls. However, we also find that different components are not equally important and that the effects of ’anxiety’ and the other factors are indeed associated with outcomes in opposite directions.

  • We ¯nd that when the hypothetical benchmarks are recognized as being unavailable for investment, there need not exist close substitutes for them in the universe of mutual funds. For an investor who believes completely in the accuracy of the Fama-French model and precludes managerial skill, the perceived maximum Sharpe ratio is only 66 percent of what could be achieved by direct investment in that model's benchmarks. For a believer in the Carhart four-factor model, the corresponding value is 54 percent.

  • By inadvertently increasing the concentration of energy-trapping gases in the lower atmosphere, human actions have begun to amplify Earth’s natural green- house effect. The primary challenge facing the world community is to achieve sufficient reduction in greenhouse gas emissions so as to avoid dangerous inter- ference in the climate system. National governments, via the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), are committed in principle to seeking this outcome.

  • Every time there is a major financial crisis, and there have been quite a number of them in history, we fi nd that there are many who are ready to dwell on blaming people and institutions; and only very few who offer really serious and constructive new proposals for improvements in our fi nancial system that can repair the damage and reduce the impact of future crises. It is much harder to do the latter, as it requires coming to an understanding of the real origins of the crisis.
