  • DDT (Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) and chlordane are the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) dangerous to human health and easily accumulate in biological tissues, used to control insects in crops, livestock and house protection. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of DDT, cis (alpha-chlordane), and trans (gamma-chlordane) on the growth of two crustaceans species Daphnia magna (D. magna) and Moina macrocopa (M. macrocopa) after 24 h and 48 h.

  • The use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) has decreased considerably worldwide; they have been banned in most countries due to adverse impacts on wildlife. The purpose of the study was to investigate OCP residue levels in wild birds from Aegean, Marmara, Mediterranean, and Central Anatolia geographical regions of Turkey. Feather samples (n = 80) of four bird species in four regions were collected from anthropogenically dead birds such as roadkill and wind turbine collision. Feather samples were analysed using GC/MS and scanned for 23 pesticide congeners.

  • The incidence of testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT), the most common cancer in men aged 15 to 45 years, has doubled over the last 30 years in developed countries. Reasons remain unclear but a role of environmental factors, especially during critical periods of development, is strongly suspected.

  • An experiment was conducted at Balindi Research Complex Farm of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal duringRabi season of 2018-2019 to evaluate the impact of spot application of Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml per litre of water to suppress the initial population of the mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi) to check build up of destructive form. The pesticide was applied as spot application in three different tillage with five different fertilizers regimes in five mustard cultivars (B- 54, ADV- 414, B- 9, Bullet, TBM- 204).

  • Plant protection using synthetic pesticides has become one of the essential components of modern agriculture. Although need based judicious application of pesticides have made a significant impact on increasing crop productivity in agricultural sector by combating heavy losses due to pest infestation but there are lots of serious associated bottlenecks with pesticides. The major issues related to pesticide application are environmental pollution, health hazards, pest resurgence, secondary pest outbreak etc.

  • Intensive agriculture has been successful owing to its input viz. fertilizers and pesticides along with high yielding varieties. But due to xenobiotic characteristics of pesticides in soil, it may adversely affect the growth of beneficial microorganisms and transformations associated with them. Pesticide contamination is a major concern in current scenario of agriculture. Microorganisms influence important biochemical reactions such as mineralization of organic matter, nitrification, ammonification etc.

  • In order to increase agricultural production different type of pesticides viz., organochlorines, carbamates etc. are used on large scale to kill unwanted insects, pests, plants etc.; as mode of action of most of them is not specific, they often harm or kill organisms other than pests, including humans. Residues of most common pesticides could affect the ultimate consumers (animal and human) especially when pesticide treated fruit/vegetables are consumed raw. Proper processing technique in daily use of vegetables and fruits i.e. washing, peeling boiling, cooking, frying, sun drying etc.

  • In modern agriculture there is a pivotal role of pesticides in pest management though, the side effect pesticides on soil biological system is non avoidable. Experimental result shows that imidacloprid recorded 21.42% increased azotobacter population while chlorpyrifos recorded 31.04% less azotobacter in comparison with untreated check. All the treatments showed negative impact on the rhizobium population and rate of growth inhibition was 30.81% to 55.18%; whereas the inhibition rate was ranged 22.08% to 54.37% in case of total bacteria population.

  • Now a days agriculture is getting more and more dependent upon the supply of synthetic inputs such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides etc. which are inevitable to meet food demand for growing population in the world. However, excessive, imprudent and imbalanced use of inputs may throw devastating impacts on the water, air and soil environments. Probably the soil environment is the most vulnerable to the direct effects of these practices in modern agriculture.

  • Agriculture and climate change are inextricable. Crop yield, biodiversity, water use, and soil health are directly affected by the impact of climate change. Tropical countries are likely to be more affected compared to temperate countries. The brunt of environmental changes in India is very high due to higher dependence on agriculture. Such a study would contribute towards a better understanding of the intensity and impacts of the climate change. The research study was conducted in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha taking 120 respondents from Tirtol and Raghunathpur block.
