Impervious surfaces

Bài viết này nghiên cứu mối quan hệ giữa đảo nhiệt đô thị (Urban heat island-UHI) và phần trăm diện tích bề mặt không thấm nước (% ISA – Impervious surface area) với khu vực thử nghiệm ở Thành phố Hà Nội, Việt Nam. Nhiệt độ bề mặt đất được tính toán từ băng nhiệt Landsat TM.

The results demonstrate the capacity of this multi-sensors approach for urban evolution study. This type of product might help authorities in decision making when it is necessary to develop a sustainable strategy for improving urban life, and reducing the impact of urbanization on agricultural resources and natural environment. There are 5 sections in this paper: Introduction, study area, method and data used, results and conclusion.

In addition to the creation of more wastewater, urban areas add to poor water quality in a number of ways. The high concentration of impervious surfaces increases runoff from roads and can carry numerous pollutants such as oils, heavy metals, rubber, and other automobile pollution into waterways and streams. The reduction in water percolation into the ground can also affect the quantity and quality of groundwater. Stormwater runoff in urban areas can overwhelm combined stormwater and wastewater treatment systems when high volume flows exceed treatment capacities.

In this research, remote sensing technology was used to evaluate urban development and its thermal characteristics through mapping impervious surfaces and evaluating thermal infrared images. The study is carried out in the northern part of Ho Chi Minh City, which is experienced an accelerated urban development since the end of 1980s. Landsat and Aster images were used to calculate the variation in urban impervious surfaces from 1989 to 2006. Constructed wetlands are known widely by their characteristic properties like utilization of natural processes, simple and easy of construction, operation and maintain as well. The constructed subsurface flow wetland is designed as a tank with an impervious boundary to prevent seepage and contain a suitable porous media in which emergent plants grow. The water remains below the surface of the gravel/stone/rock media. Soil in constructed subsurface flow wetland absorbs and stores organic matter several years.
