Stress shielding after total hip arthroplasty (THA) leads to loss of bone mineral density (BMD) around the femoral implants, particularly in the proximal area. Loss of BMD around the implant is likely to occur within 1 year after THA; however, its severity depends on patient characteristics.

Cementless hip cups need sufficient primary tilting stability to achieve osseointegration. The aim of the study was to assess differences of the primary implant stability in osteoporotic bone and in bone with normal bone density. To assess the influence of different cup designs, two types of threaded and two types of press-fit cups were tested.

Bone resorption in the proximal femur due to stress shielding has been observed in a number of conventional cementless implants used in total hip arthroplasty. Short femoral-neck implants are claiming less interference with the biomechanics of the proximal femur.

The correlation between implant density and deformity correction has not yet led to a precise conclusion in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of low density (LD) and high density (HD) pedicle screw instrumentation in terms of the clinical, radiological and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22 outcomes in Lenke 1 AIS.

Aseptic loosening of glenoid implants is the primary revision cause in anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). While supported by biomechanical studies, the impact of glenoid bone quality, more specifically bone mineral density (BMD), on aseptic glenoid loosening remains unclear.

In osteoporotic bone, the quality of the bone-to-implant interface is decreased, which may lead to early implant failure. Screw anchorage can be improved by augmentation. This effect is mainly investigated with a pull-out test.

Canines suffering from long bone fractures were immobilized by low density polypropylene (LDPP) splint and fiber glass cast. The study was conducted in clinical cases of 12 dogs suffering from long bone fractures. Animals were divided in two groups viz. Group I: Low density polypropylene (LDPP) splint (N=6) and Group II: Fiber Glass cast (N=6). Dogs immobilized with fiberglass casts attained full mobility and complete weight bearing on fractured limb earlier than the dogs treated with Low density polypropylene (LDPP) splints.

Magnesium alloys have always been attractive to designers due to their low density, only two thirds that of aluminium. This has been a major factor in the widespread use of magnesium alloy castings and wrought products. The present book gives us an overview in some special areas of magnesium alloys concerning technological applications and eco-friendly requirements. Each chapter brings us a new facet relating to the application of magnesium alloy including, as an example, researches with rare earth metals as alloying components in magnesium implants for orthopaedic applications....

The preferred profile to achieve a good compromise between a too high field at the base-collector junction and suppression of the Kirk effect at high current densities is obtained by a retrograde collector profile [30]. For this profile the SIC implantation energy is chosen to obtain a low impurity concentration near the base-collector junction and then increasing toward the subcollector.
