Important grain yield traits

Physiological and morphological traits of flag leaf play important roles in determining crop grain yield and biomass. In order to understand genetic basis controlling physiological and morphological traits of flag leaf, a double haploid (DH) population derived from the cross of Huaai 11 × Huadamai 6 was used to detect quantitative trait locus (QTL) underlying 7 physiological and 3 morphological traits at the pre-filling stage in year 2012 and 2013.

Drought is one of the most important abiotic stresses that cause drastic reduction in rice grain yield (GY) in rainfed environments. The identification and introgression of QTL leading to high GY under drought have been advocated to be the preferred breeding strategy to improve drought tolerance of popular rice varieties.

Yield-related traits including thousand grain weight (TGW), grain number per spike (GNS), grain width (GW), grain length (GL), plant height (PH), spike length (SL), and spikelet number per spike (SNS) are greatly associated with grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the world’s most important grain crops. The amyloplast, a specialized organelle, is the major site for starch synthesis and storage in wheat grain. Understanding the metabolism in amyloplast during grain development in wheat cultivars with different quality traits will provide useful information for potential yield and quality improvement.

Transition to flowering at the right time is critical for local adaptation and to maximize grain yield in crops. Canola is an important oilseed crop with extensive variation in flowering time among varieties. However, our understanding of underlying genes and their role in canola productivity is limited.

The general combining ability (GCA) of parents in hybrid rice affects not only heterotic level of grain yield and other important agronomic traits, but also performance of grain quality traits of F2 bulk population which is the commodity consumed by humans.

Heat tolerance is becoming increasingly important where maize is grown under spring season in India which coincide with grain filling stage of crop resulting in tassel blast, reduced pollen viability, pollination failure and barren ears that causes devastating yield losses.

TaCKX wheat gene family members (GFMs) encode the enzyme cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX), which irreversibly degrades cytokinins. The genes are important regulators of cytokinin content and take part in growth and development, with a major impact on yield-related traits.

Ecological environments shape plant architecture and alter the growing season, which provides the basis for wheat genetic improvement. Therefore, understanding the genetic basis of grain yield and yield-related traits in specific ecological environments is important.

In this study, MABC was applied to transfer QTL/gene which is responsible for trait of increasing number of grains per panicle from donor (KC25) to recipient plant (KD18). The results have shown that the successfully selected individual No 14 in BC3 F1 population carrying QTL/gene and attained the highest genetic background of the recipient plant up to 100% were made.

Hence medium stature plant with long panicle, sturdy culms and more grains per panicle would be highly advantageous for this situation. Other important traits for simultaneous consideration for yield enhancement are spikelet fertility and 1000 seed weight.

The bread wheat is one of the most important crop providing one-fifth of total calories for world’s population. Growth in population is increasing the demand for wheat. Wheat breeders have been concentrated on development of HYV’s (High yielding varieties) which required genetic information (mode of inheritance and gene action parameters of yield components) of parental population. For this purpose diallel analysis used.

The exploitation of yield potential through inter sub specific (inter-racial) hybridization become a challenging task for rice breeders. Grain yield improvement is considered to be prime objective of any breeding programme, quality traits are yet another important consideration of rice breeding in India. Association of yield and yield components and among grain quality traits thus assumes a unique prominence as the basis for selecting desirable high yielding genotypes with good grain quality characters.

What is an important food crop in India but of the entire world. The study indicates that the analysis of the variance showed highly significant differences for all the characters. Genetic variability indicated that high estimates of GCV and PCV were observed for the traits like 1000 grain weight, grains per spike, spikelets per spike, spike length and yield per plot. Further, high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was also observed, indicating the less influence of environmental variance in these characters.

The study was conducted to determine the correlation and path coefficients among the yield and yield component characters in 14 parental lines and 91 hybrids of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L. R. Br), formulated by a diallel cross excluding reciprocals. Strong and significant genotypic and phenotypic correlations were observed between grain yield (kg ha-1 ) with panicle girth (cm),plant height (cm) and panicle length (cm).

Thirty two hybrids developed from crossing four CMS lines with 8 restorers were studied among with parents for 14 yield and yield attributing characters. Among the male parental lines, JGL 18047, IET 26264 and RNR 26060 appeared the best general combiners for yield and important yield component traits. The most promising specific cross combinations were JMS 13A x RNR 26060 and CMS 64A x WGL 14 for grain yield and most of the component characters.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L., 2n = 26) is an important oilseed crop with an estimated genome size of 369 Mb. The genetic basis, including the number and locations of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of sesame grain yield and quality remain poorly understood, due in part to the lack of reliable markers and genetic maps.

Kernel weight and size are important components of grain yield in cereals. Although some information is available concerning the map positions of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for kernel weight and size in maize, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of these QTLs. qGW4.05 is a major QTL that is associated with kernel weight and size in maize.

Physiological traits play an important role in crop growth and development. Comparative investigation on small millets, with respect different physiological traits such as leaf area index, leaf area duration, specific leaf weight, chlorophyll content, gas exchange parameters etc. and their relationship with grain yields were meager, and will be useful in small millets improvement.
