Improved animal husbandry and knowledge

The indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) regarding animal husbandry is considered as old as domestication of various livestock species. Unfortunately, these practices which are in vogue throughout the rural India are little documented and there is danger of extinction of this knowledge. Thus it is become imperative to collect and document these practices. A semi structured interview schedule was used for the data collection from 10 traditional healers and 120 livestock owners.

The present study was conducted in Gujarat. The investigation concerned with Saurashtra Region of Gujarat Animal husbandry is the main occupation and Maximum agriculture and animal husbandry practices are followed by the farm women in research area. India occupies the foremost position among the countries of world in respect of livestock. Livestock is an important segment of agriculture in India as it makes bread and butter for small and marginal farmers in country.

To study the knowledge of dairy animal owners in improved dairy husbandry practices a field survey in Bihar state was conducted during April-June’2016. Data were collected through personal interview from randomly selected 1550 dairy animal owners from randomly selected villages from Chhapra, Vaishali district of Bihar with the help of pretested structured schedule. Survey indicates that the 71.67 percentage of the livestock farmers belonged to middle age category range from 35-50 years, followed by 15.00 percent in young age category and 13.33% belonged to old age category.

In India livestock sector play important role to improve the economic condition of farmers. About 70 % of livestock population is control by the landless, small and marginal farmers which are the source of income for farmers. Concept of doubling of farmer’s income by 2022 was given by Hon Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi ji on February 29, 2016 in Bareilly Uttar Pradesh.
