Improving soil properties

Vacuum consolidation preloading method (VCM) has been widely adopted as an effective solution for soft soil improvement over the world. Recently, VCM has been successfully applied for improving the geotechnical properties of dredged mud, which is normally dumped at reclamation area by hydraulic pumping.

In this paper, physico-chemical and mineralogical properties of fly ash from Pha Lai, Mong Duong and Ninh Binh thermal power stations were studied for ultilization to improve soil properties. Results shows that the properties of fly ash depend on the nature of parent coal, conditions of combustion, type of emission control devices, and storage and handling methods.

The technological conditions of obtaining the polylactic acid-Vietnamese cassava starch blend on the mix-brabender were investigated. The optimal conditions were: temperature 160o C, reaction time 6 minutes, screw speed 45 r/min., initial material ratio in weight percentage PLA80- PEG10-TB20. Polyethyleneglycol (PEG) as a plasticizer, PN-47 as a distribution agent was used. It showed that the optimal starch content was 20 wt%. Increase in starch content lead to increase in water absorbability and weight loss of the materials.
