Inappropriate interventions

Deprescribing is a clinical intervention aimed at managing polypharmacy and improving older adults’ health outcomes. However, evidence suggests that healthcare professionals (HCPs) may face challenges in implementing the intervention. This study aimed to explore the considerations, barriers and enablers of deprescribing among HCPs in Southwest Nigeria.

To test associations between several opioid prescribing policy interventions and changes in early (acute/subacute) high-risk opioid prescribing practices. Several state-level opioid prescribing policies were significantly associated with safer workers’ compensation-related opioid prescribing practices during the first 3 months after injury (acute/subacute phase), which should in turn reduce transition to chronic opioids and associated negative health outcomes.

To assess how age-friendly deprescribing trials are regarding intervention design and outcome assessment. Reduced use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) can be addressed by deprescribing—a systematic process of discontinuing and/or reducing the use of PIMs. The 4Ms—“Medication”, “Mentation”, “Mobility”, and “What Matters Most” to the person—can be used to guide assessment of age-friendliness of deprescribing trials.

A multimodal general practitioner-focused intervention in the Local Health Authority (LHA) of Parma, Italy, substantially reduced the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use among older adults. Our objective was to estimate changes in hospitalization rates associated with the Parma LHA quality improvement initiative that reduced PIM use.

Older people living with frailty are often exposed to polypharmacy and potential harm from medications. Targeted deprescribing in this population represents an important component of optimizing medication. This systematic review aims to summarise the current evidence for deprescribing among older people living with frailty.

Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are common among nursing homes (NH) residents, as is polypharmacy. Deprescribing has emerged in the past decade as a safe and effective way to reduce the use of PIMs and improve patient outcomes. However, effective deprescribing interventions are expensive, as they require specialised staff and a great amount of time for each resident.

Evidence regarding clinically relevant efects of interventions aiming at reducing polypharmacy is weak, especially for the primary care setting. This study was initiated with the objective to achieve clinical benefts for older patients (aged 75+) by means of evidence-based reduction of polypharmacy (defned as ≥8 prescribed drugs) and inappropriate prescribing in general practice.

Research suggests that collaborative and tailored approaches with external expertise are important to process implementations. We therefore performed a process evaluation of an intervention using participatory action research, tailored information provision, and external coaching to reduce inappropriate psychotropic drug use among nursing home residents with dementia.

Deprescribing polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) has been shown to be beneficial to nursing home (NH) residents' health. Medication reviews are the most widely studied deprescribing intervention; in a previous trial, we showed that another intervention, a deprescribing-focused interprofessional quality circle, can reduce the use of inappropriate medications at the NH level.

Wildlife rescue centres care for orphaned and injured young as an integral part of their work. However, inappropriate interventions in nature can have a negative effect on the survival of young hares, especially when the care of these young is not very successful.

This research investigated the inappropriate behavior of preschool children with autism in a classroom and examined the effectiveness of the use of social stories to decrease inappropriate autistic behavior. An A-B-A-B single subject design was used across the five participants selected for the study.

The irrational overuse of antibiotics should be minimized as it drives the development of antibiotic resistance, but changing these practices is challenging. A better understanding is needed of practices and economic incentives for antibiotic dispensing in order to design effective interventions to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use.

Basidiobolomycosis is a very rare form of subcutaneous mycosis often confused with other clinically mimicking conditions. Poor clinical suspicion and lack of experience due to its rarity sometimes misdirects clinicians, pathologists and microbiologists. Wrongful diagnosis may lead to inappropriate and fatal interventions. This present endeavour is aimed at a thorough study of those cases to readdress the challenges in diagnosis and management from eastern India.

In any surgical fi eld, the importance of suturing is selfevident. In eye surgery, due to the lack of elasticity of the tissues and the infl uence of sutures on the visual outcome, proper microsurgical suturing technique is paramount. Inappropriate or careless suture placement and knot tying can impact visual function. If wound construction and closure are not astigmatically neutral, the visual outcome will be altered and further surgical intervention may be required. Wound related complications are more severe in the eye than in the skin.
