Despite efforts to enhance the quality of medication prescribing in outpatient settings, potentially inappropriate prescribing remains common, particularly in unscheduled settings where patients can present with infectious and pain-related complaints. Two of the most commonly prescribed medication classes in outpatient settings with frequent rates of potentially inappropriate prescribing include antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-infammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Deprescribing is a clinical intervention aimed at managing polypharmacy and improving older adults’ health outcomes. However, evidence suggests that healthcare professionals (HCPs) may face challenges in implementing the intervention. This study aimed to explore the considerations, barriers and enablers of deprescribing among HCPs in Southwest Nigeria.

Antibiotic resistance has been determined as a global threat. Inappropriate use of antibiotics is a crucial driver of the evolution of resistance. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted aiming to describe the antibiotic usage among the elderly (60 years old and above) in Tan Loi commune, Dong Hy district, Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam in 2020. The questionnaire survey was submitted to 370 participants.

Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs) have a mortality rate of 11.6%, are costly to treat, and result in Medicare reimbursement penalties. Medicare codes HAPUs according to Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient-Safety Indicator 3 (PSI-03), but they are sometimes inappropriately coded.

We sought to investigate the experiences of general practitioners (GPs) with an electronic decision support tool to reduce inappropriate polypharmacy in older patients (the PRIMA-eDS [Polypharmacy in chronic diseases: Reduction of Inappropriate Medication and Adverse drug events in older populations by electronic Decision Support] tool) in a multinational sample of GPs and to quantify the findings from a prior qualitative study on the PRIMA-eDS-tool.

To estimate the national cost of ADEs resulting from inappropriate medication-related alert overrides in the U.S. inpatient setting. Materials and Methods: We used three different regression models (Basic, Model 1, Model 2) with model inputs taken from the medical literature. A random sample of 40 990 adult inpatients at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston with a total of 1 639 294 medication orders was taken.

Concerns regarding inappropriate leakage of sensitive personal information as well as unauthorized data use are increasing with the growth of genomic data repositories. Therefore, privacy and security of genomic data have become increasingly important and need to be studied. With many proposed protection techniques, their applicability in support of biomedical research should be well understood.

To assess how age-friendly deprescribing trials are regarding intervention design and outcome assessment. Reduced use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) can be addressed by deprescribing—a systematic process of discontinuing and/or reducing the use of PIMs. The 4Ms—“Medication”, “Mentation”, “Mobility”, and “What Matters Most” to the person—can be used to guide assessment of age-friendliness of deprescribing trials.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to global public health. Inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to an increase in antibiotic resistance. Individual self-efficacy in the appropriate use of antibiotics plays a key role, especially in China where the population has easy access to antibiotics.

Potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use has adverse effects on health, particularly in elder patients. Various country-specific explicit criteria have been developed to measure the appropriateness of prescribing worldwide. However, it is difficult to apply the criteria developed from other regions to measure and guide the local prescribing practice in Hong Kong.

The use of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in population of older adults may result in adverse drug events (ADE) already after short term exposure, especially when it is prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In order to limit ADE in the treatment of older adults PIM lists have been constructed as a source of information for healthcare professionals.

The use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) is common in older adults and is associated with potential negative consequences, such as falls and cognitive decline. Our objective was to investigate measurable patient factors associated with new outpatient prescribing of potentially inappropriate medications in older multimorbid adults already using multiple medications.

A precondition for developing strategies to reduce polypharmacy and its well-known harmful consequences is to study its epidemiology and associated factors. The objective of this study was to analyse the prevalence of polypharmacy (defined as ≥8 prescribed drugs), of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and major drug-drug interactions (DDIs) among community-dwelling general practice patients aged ≥75 years and to identify characteristics being associated with polypharmacy.
