Plant height (PH) and ear height (EH) are two important agronomic traits in maize selection breeding. F1 hybrid exhibit significant heterosis for PH and EH as compared to their parental inbred lines. To understand the genetic basis of heterosis controlling PH and EH, we conducted quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis using a recombinant inbreed line (RIL) based design III population derived from the elite maize hybrid Zhengdan 958 in five environments.

Information on population structure and genetic diversity of germplasm in a breeding programme is useful because it enhances judicious utilisation of genetic resources to achieve breeding objectives. Seventy early maturing provitamin A (PVA) quality protein maize (QPM) inbreds developed by the IITA- maize improvement programme were genotyped using 8171 DArTseq markers.

Heterosis breeding is the most useful method for yield increase around the globe. Heterosis is an intriguing process to develop superior offspring to either parent in the desired character. The biomass vigor produced during seedling emergence stage has a direct influence on yield heterosis in plants. Unfortunately, the genetic basis of early biomass vigor in cotton is poorly understood.

Development of high oil content (>40%) inbreds, parental lines and hybrids assumes priority in sunflower. Towards this objective, a high oil content genetic stock HOSuS-1 was developed through introduction and selection from the genotype GP4-1424 imported from Russia. Selections were made for different characters including oil content in later generations

Development of QPM (Quality Protein Maize) with high lysine and tryptophan is foremost important task in enhancing nutritional quality in maize through breeding programme. Marker assisted selection is the most feasible way of developing QPM hybrids in short time. The present investigation deals with conversion of elite normal maize inbred lines BML6 and BML7 (parental lines of DHM117 hybrid) into QPM lines using marker assisted selection. The nutritional quality of maize is enhanced by introgression of the opaque2 (o2) gene along with numerous modifiers for kernel hardness.

Breeding for high yield crops require information on nature and magnitude of variation in the available material, relationship of yield with other agronomic characters and the degree of environmental influence on the expression of these component characters. Since grain yield in rice is quantitative in nature and polygenically controlled, effective yield improvement and simultaneous improvement of yield components are imperative.

With the plummeting cost of the next-generation sequencing technologies, high-density genetic linkage maps could be constructed in a forest hybrid F1 population. However, based on such genetic maps, quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping cannot be directly conducted with traditional statistical methods or tools because the linkage phase and segregation pattern of molecular markers are not always fixed as in inbred lines.
