An experiment was conducted to evaluate the direct effect of different level of sulphur (S) alone or in combination with organic manures on mustard in calcareous soil of north India. Sulphur application significantly increased the S concentration and its uptake by mustard (seed+stover). The optimum level of S was found to be 60 kg S ha-1 in conjoint with 5 t Bio Gas Slurry (BGS) ha-1 for mustard crop with respect to concentration and nutrient uptake.

Iron is one of the essential mineral for all organisms and its deficiency leads to many serious problems in human being worldwide. Plants have evolved with specific ZIP transporters to uptake and transport the iron from the soil. IRT2 is one of the ZIPs family members, which has a role in uptake of Fe2+ from the soil. Indian barnyard millet (E. frumentacea L.) is one of the rich sources of iron among millets. IRT2 gene of Indian barnyard millet is up regulated under iron deficient condition and hence we isolated EfIRT2 gene.

Different methods of soil organic carbon (SOC) determination namely Walkley and Black (WB), Modified WB, Photometric, gravimetric and dry combustion methods were compared. Each method has its own advantages and limitations. Percentage of carbon recovered ranged from 51.03 to 110.13 and the calculated correction factor (CF) varied from 0.90 to 1.95. Highly significant correlation (r) was obtained among all the SOC methods. The highest and lowest coefficient of determination (R2 ) was found in Heanes photometric (0.91) and gravimetric methods (0.75), respectively.

The findings of present study suggested that the pH in soils neutral to slightly alkaline safe in electrical conductivity and low to medium in organic carbon content. Metals concentration was below the permissible limits at 200,400,600 and 800 m, from both side of Omati Nala, in rainy and winter seasons, respectively. In water, pH ranged from 6.5 to 8.5 and EC under permissible range. However, Pb and Cr were comparatively higher than the Indian permissible limits. The concentration of Ni, Cr and Cd in rice, wheat and Brinjal was higher than the limit given by WHO/Indian standard.
