Indigenous aromatic rice

Sixty rice genotypes were evaluated during kharif 2014 for sixteen quantitative and quality traits to examine the nature and magnitude of variability, heritability, genetic advance and correlation. Analysis of variance revealed that the differences among sixty genotypes were significant for all the characters. The characters viz., number of effective tillers per plant, seeds per panicle and brown rice length exhibited high Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) and Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation (PCV).

The phenological development and thermal unit requirements of seven aromatic rice landraces of West Bengal were studied in randomized block design (RBD) with 3 replications at ‘C’ Block Farm (22o 99’ N, 88o 45’ E, 9.75 m.s.l.), Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, West Bengal, India during kharif (wet) season of 2008 and 2009. All seven indigenous scented rice cultivars were long-duration types (140.0 – 148.3 days) and differed slightly among themselves towards attainment of different phenophases and accumulation of heat units.

DNA-based markers have the potential to improve the efficiency and precision of breeding programs based on markerassisted selection. In the present study we evaluated the predictive abilities of previously reported PCR-based simple sequence repeat and functional markers related to fragrance in a set of 24 rice genotypes, including traditional basmatis, evolved basmatis, and aromatic indigenous landraces.
