Inducible Amp-C
-
Administration of a competitive exclusion culture (CE culture) has the potential to induce protective effects in very young chicks against caecal colonisation by EEC (= extended-spectrum β-lactamases [ESBL] and AmpC-type [AmpC] beta-lactamases producing Escherichia coli).

The incidence of AmpC beta-lactamase producing K. pneumoniae has been steadily increasing over past years and is of significant concern as they restrict therapeutic options and cause treatment failure. The objective of the present study was to know the occurrence of AmpC beta-lactamase producing K. pneumoniae and to create a baseline antibiotic resistance data to implement effective antibiotic policy.

AmpC beta-lactamases hydrolyse penicillins, monobactams, cephalosporins and cephamycins. AmpC producers are resistant tobetalactam/betalactamase inhibitor combinations therapeutically. AmpC is generally underreported which leads to therapeutic failures and uncontrolled spread of these resistant strains. Hence, there is an increased need to detect AmpC routinely in the laboratory. To detect AmpC β-lactamase production among Enterobacteriaceae isolated from clinical samples and to compare different inducer substrate combinations for the detection of inducible Amp-C (iAmpC).

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an important nosocomial infection in mechanically ventilated patients at intensive care unit (ICU). The administration of accurate and timely initial empirical antibiotic therapy is essential to reduce the morbidity and mortality from Ventilator-associated pneumonia. Initial empiric antimicrobial therapy for VAP greatly depends on the type of causative pathogen and its resistance pattern. During the six months study period, 196 patients received mechanical ventilation.
