Industry effluent irrigation growth

A field experiment was conducted in the premises of Pepsico Pvt. Ltd., near Bengaluru during 2013-14 to study the effect of beverage industry effluent on growth, yield and quality of sunflower with ten treatments replicated thrice using RCBD design. The use of industrial waste water for irrigation through drip system has emerged a very important way to utilize its nutrients and removal of its pollutants load by cultivating various crops (tomato, brinjal). An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of textile factory effluents (0, 10, 35, 75 and 100% concentration) on germination and some physiological parameters like biomass production, root development in vegetable crop. Plants were raised in small pots in triplicate and irrigated with various concentrations (0, 10, 35, 75 and 100%) of effluent.

The treated industrial wastewater has been, continuously used for crop production in the water scares region of our country. Irrigation with agro-based industrial wastewater (treated paper mill effluent) though it initially increased the yield of many crops, over a period; it deteriorates the soil quality by addition of soluble salts in soil profile results in deflocculating of soil structure, reduced infiltration and waterlogging leads to yield reduction in some crops under poor management condition.
