To evaluate the effect of paid family leave in California on statewide rates of preterm birth, low birthweight, postneonatal mortality, and overall infant mortality. Data Sources: Live birth and death certificates from all in-hospital deliveries occurring in California (state exposed to the family leave policy) and two unexposed states (Missouri and Pennsylvania) from 1999 to 2008 (n = 6 164 203).

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in premature infants is one of the leading causes of death. Surfactant replacement therapy has been the mainstay of treatment for preterm infants with RDS. This study aimed to evaluate the results of surfactant therapy for premature infants with RDS at the Pediatric Center of Hue Central Hospital.

Brachial plexus injury in neonates is a rare obstetrical complication, but it can cause huge anxiety to parents if occurring and sometimes leading to legal disputes in obstetrical practice. Trauma during birth delivery is mainly due to the over-stretch of fetal neck which is the main cause of brachial plexus injury in infants. However, those injuries are self-limited and most of them will self-recover. We conducted a retrospective analysis on ten cases diagnosed of post-delivery brachial plexus injury under monitoring at Tu Du Hospital from January to November 2018.

The original NIPS was translated into Vietnamese using a standard protocol. Registered nurses of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Tien Giang General Hospital, Vietnam used the Vietnamese NIPS for assessing neonatal pain and then provided feedback on acceptability of the scale. Five registered nurses of NICU were randomly selected and used NIPS for assessing neonatal pain while watching thirty videos at two times, two weeks apart from each other. Pulse rates per minute and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were also recorded for validity evaluation.

Sepsis is still one of the main causes of infants and children mortality especially in developing, economically challenged countries with limited resources. Our objective in this study was to determine, the prognostic value of platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and plateletcrit (PCT) in critically ill infants and children with severe sepsis, as they are readily available biomarkers, that can guide clinicians during managing of severe sepsis.

Lower respiratory tract infections are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Several viruses can cause bronchiolitis. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV), influenza type A, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are some of the common viruses found in hospital studies. This study aimed to study the molecular diagnosis of HPMV infections by using a realtime, reverse-transcriptase PCR assay and the evaluation of its prevalence among Egyptian infants clinically diagnosed with acute viral bronchiolitis.

Microbiological surveillance of human milk from milk bank in tertiary care hospital in Jaipur, India
Breast milk is the best source of nutrition as it is composed of all bio active components required for the growth and development of infant. Even after the advances in infant formula mixes, breast milk is universally accepted to be best suited to infants. The objective of this study is to ensure quality of donated breast milk as a safe end product. The study is done to determine the prevalence of potentially pathogenic micro-organism that indicates hygiene and sanitary conditions of human milk collected at milk bank.

With the increase in hospitalization of premature infants in emergency departments and the painful procedure in these sectors, appropriate methods of pain relief are required. This study aimed to compare the effect of oral dextrose and facilitated tucking in the reduction of pain during heel sticks in premature infants and assess their effectiveness and feasibility for use in emergency settings.

Septicemia in neonates refers to generalized bacterial infection documented by positive blood culture in the first four weeks of life. Neonatal septicaemia remains one of the most important causes of mortality despite considerable progress in hygiene, introduction of new antimicrobial agents and advanced measures for early diagnosis and treatment. In this cross-sectional study, blood samples from the suspected infants were collected and processed in the bacteriology laboratory.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an important cause of morbidity in infants. The incidence of UTI is more common among boys. Inappropriately treated cases of UTI can further lead to major acute complications such as cystitis, pyelonephritis, bacteremia. Timely diagnosis and treatment is of paramount importance to prevent rare but serious complications. The objective of this study is to isolate and identify the organisms causing UTI in infants and to study antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated organisms.
