Infecting okra
-
Screening of okra genotypes was carried out under four different environments for shoot and fruit borer, yellow vein mosaic virus disease and enation leaf curl virus disease. The genotypes responded differently to different environments against different insect-pests and diseases. None of the genotype was found free from shoot and fruit borer infection, YVMV and ELCV incidence. However the genotypes that were found with some degree of resistance might be used for future breeding programmes.

The major production constraint for okra is yellow vein mosaic disease, causing losses with regard to the quality and as well as the yield. This is a viral disease occurring on bhendi. Yellowing of the entire network of veins in the leaf blade is the characteristic symptom. In severe infections, the younger leaves turn yellow to become entirely chlorotic and the plant is highly stunted.

Studies were conducted on the performance and morphological characterization of okra for yield and YVMV disease. None of the genotypes found complete free from YVMV infection. However, on scoring test few of them got resistant mark for YVMV like IIHR 129, IIHR-123, and IIHR 120. The characters like plant height, plant canopy, fruit yield per plant, PDI and CI have found wide variation. The character’s association revealed that the association of traits is not only due to genes but also due to the favorable impact of environment.

A field experiment was carried out to screen 18 okra genotypes for YVMV resistance. The per cent plant infection and the reaction of the genotypes were assessed based on the disease incidence and response value assigned by each severity grade.

In the present cytopathological study, phloem cells of diseased mid-vein retained the Azure A stain indicating the presence of foreign deoxy-ribo-nucleoprotein in comparison to healthy one. Inclusion bodies were found associated with the nucleus of diseased mid-vein phloem cells.

The present study was taken up in the Agricultural College, Bapatla during 2016-2017. Cercospora infected leaves were collected during kharif 2016 from eight different okra growing villages in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh which were used for in planta isolation of fungal DNA and amplified using universal primers ITS 1 and ITS 4. The 550 bp amplicon thus obtained was restricted with hexa cutters, EcoRI, BamHI and tetra cutter Taq1 to find variability among Cercospora isolates.

Okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench.] is an important vegetable crop grown in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The production of okra suffers from number of pest and pathogens including nematodes. Amongst nematodes, root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita is most important and responsible to cause significant economic losses in worldwide due to favorable soil and environmental conditions.

Trichoderma harzianum parasitism on Meloidogyne incognita eggs and juveniles was examined in-vitro under Assam condition. M. incognita egg masses, their derived eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2) were parasitized by T. harzianum. The conidia of the T. harzianum were found inside of the eggs and attached to the J2s with the gelatinous matrix. The eggs were penetrated and parasitized by the hyphae of T. harzianum, while eggs containing juveniles were also parasitised by T. harzianum. Further, isolate T. harzainum was used for to know the bio-efficacy against M.
