Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder of lipid metabolism. FH is characterized by raised serum LDL - C levels, leading to accelerated atherosclerosis and increased risk of premature coronary heart disease. More than 80% of the time, FH is caused by mutations in the LDL receptor. The LDL receptor consists of 18 exons, and the largest number of LDLR mutations are believed to be in exons 4 and 3. The aim of our study was to examine mutations in exons 3 and 4 of the LDLR gene in Vietnamese patients with FH.

In addition, almost 25 million people were living with a diagnosis of heart disease in 2004, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The American Medical Association wants people to know and understand that aside from some inherited or congenital conditions, heart disease is largely preventable.

Thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) play a major role in animal physiology. TRs are important and very interesting regulators of diverse aspects, including brain development, hearing, bone growth, morphogenesis, metabolism, intestine, and heart rate in vertebrates (Fig. 1). Aberrant functions of TRs induce tremendous defects in these pathways. For example, the human disease of Resistance to Thyroid Hormone (RTH) (see Chapter 8 by Yoh and Privalsky) is a genetically autosomal dominant inherited syndrome that is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the TRβ.
