Put simply, public health has a bold mission: “protecting health and saving lives— millions at a time.” In medical fields, clinicians treat diseases or injuries, one patient at a time. But in public health, we prevent disease and injury. As researchers, practitioners and educators, we work with communities and populations. We identify causes of disease and disability, and we implement largescale solutions. For example, instead of treating a gun wound, we identify causes of gun violence and develop interventions.

In spite of remarkable progress in drug therapy, childhood and adolescent epilepsy is often a distressing condition lasting several years before possible recovery. Adaptation problems to the disease and also to health recovery are likely to occur. Stigma and discrimination may persist also after recovery. 11,12 Depression in children and adolescents with epilepsy is a common but often unrecognized disorder. Both epilepsy and depression are characterized by a chronic course and poor long- term psychosocial outcome.

Over the decades, educating people about health has been an important strategy for preventing illness and injury. This approach has drawn heavily from the fields of public health, social science, communications, and education. Early experiments with education relied heavily on the delivery of information and facts. Gradually, educational approaches have turned more to skill development and to addressing all aspects of health, including physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being.
