The present study investigated the effects of organic and plastic mulching on root development and nodulation related biometric properties of cowpea determined at different stages of crop growth (60 DAS and at harvest after 90 DAS). At 60 DAS and 90 DAS (at harvest stage), majority of the root development parameters such as root length, number of secondary roots/lateral roots, root weight with nodules, root weight without nodules were recorded highest in plants grown under organic mulch treatments with different level of drip irrigation.

The surface (0-15 cm) soil samples were used for analyzing the soil properties. The soil properties were determined using soil analytical methods given by Jackson (1973). Organic carbon content determined by wet digestion method of Walkley and Black, available nitrogen (N) by Kjeldahl’s method, available phosphorous (P) by Bray and Kurtz method and available potassium (K) by flame photometric method. The data collected on various parameters have been statistically analysed as per the method of Panse and Sukhatme (1978).

The use of organic and inorganic mulch as a soil cover is effective in improving growth and yield of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.). A field experiment was carried out at College Orchard, Department of Vegetable Crops, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during 2013 to 2016 to study the effect of different types of mulches viz., organic mulch @ 6.0 t/ha, organic mulch @ 9.0 t/ha, organic mulch @ 12.

An experiment was conducted at Fruit Research Farm, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh to study the effects of organic and inorganic mulching on soil microbial population in acid lime using Randomized Block Design. The study revealed that the microbial population of the soil was found to be highly significant. The highest microbial population count for bacteria was observed in paddy straw mulch (83.45 × 105 cfu/g) followed by rice husk mulch (74.88 × 105 cfu/g) and minimum was found in control (14.06 × 105 cfu/g).
