The major findings of this research show the challenges Vietnamese students face in academic writing due to not only the interference of L1 to L2 in the process of second language acquisition, but also the current academic writing instructions (e.g. critique essays, argumentative writing). Some pedagogical implications for both teachers and students to improve their writing teaching and learning are proposed.

This study conducted a literature review about the necessity to apply some effective strategies to improve learners‟ English vocabulary instruction. The results indicated that it is advisable for teachers to use different vocabulary teaching techniques i.e. explicit, implicit and independent vocabulary teaching. Based on three approaches, some pedagogical implications for vocabulary development are put forward as resourceful references for teachers of English to exploit effective vocabulary teaching opportunities through different vocabulary teaching strategies.

The current paper examines the journal entries and class discussions of 12 pre-service teachers who were enrolled on a writing methods course that I have been teaching as part of an ESL teacher preparation program for the last 5 years. Students take this three credit course as an elective toward a master’s program in Instructional Systems Development with concentration on ESL/Bilingual Education. The program consists of 36 hours on ESL methodologies, cross-cultural communication, second language acquisition, assessment and evaluation and instructional systems design.

First errors of learning are usually gigantic. Then, and gradually, they diminish as one benefits of his/her errors. In a later stage of learning foreign or second language, learners are expected to reach a native speaker’s competence or, at least, near that competence where errors are either eliminated or minimized to the extent that their impact on the learners' communication disappears, or they go unnoticed. But, unfortunately, the case with most of second language learners’ errors is not so.
