Intensification in rice

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the staple food and being the most important ingredient of the food basket for most nations in Asia. The declining productivity of rice and its availability of per capita is therefore a policy concern. Nevertheless, the production of rice in Malaysia is primarily implemented by adopting the conventional technique. This technique has increased the production cost of rice and became a constraint to achieving the production potential for the farmer.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is world’s most widely cultivated food grain crop. At initial decades of 21st century, one probability of a great famine appeared in the world due to long drought in tropics and subtropics and at the same time it appeared more dangerously because of the climate change threat. System of Wheat Intensification (SWI) which is somewhat based on the fundamental principles of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a new wheat cultivation technique which might act as a significantly new weapon as a part of climate-smart farming.

Field experiments were conducted during 2015 & 2016 at Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops, Khudwani, SKUAST-Kashmir, India. Our objective was to measure the impact of alternative water management practices and varying N levels on water productivity, physiology, growth and yield of rice. Treatments comprised of three irrigation regimes; Submerged conditions (I1); Irrigation at 3 days after disappearance of ponded water (I2); Irrigation at 6 days after the disappearance of ponded water (I3) in main plots and four nitrogen doses viz.

Soil Test Crop Response studies involving Integrated Plant Nutrition System (STCR - IPNS) were conducted on a Typic Haplustalf of Tamil Nadu, Southern India for developing fertiliser prescriptions for desired yield targets of rice- rice sequence under System of Rice Intensification (SRI). By adopting the Inductive cum Targeted yield model, variations in soil fertility with reference to soil available nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were established and test crop experiment was conducted with rice-rice sequence. The findings pertaining to rabi season is discussed in this paper.

Leaf area was significantly higher in the system of rice intensification (SRI) method of establishment from 30 DAT and reached a peak value at 90 DAT then decreased. At 90 DAT, leaf area was 1717.21 cm2 as compared to aerobic (967.97 cm2 ) and conventional (1002.31cm2 ) methods of establishment.

Early sowing of rice by 20 June produced significantly the highest grain yield followed by normal (5 July) and late sowings (20 July) and the yield of its stubble crop also followed the similar trend. The combined grain yields of early sown rice-ratoon and the rice equivalent yield (REY) of early sown green gram was significantly higher by 8.64% and 23.74% than normal and late sowings, respectively in rice-ratoon-green gram system. The combined REY in modified system of rice intensification (MSRI)-ratoon-green gram system was 7.33% and 33.

The study was carried out in the two district of Tripura, viz., West Tripura and South Tripura with randomly selected 200 rice farmers from purposively selected 4 blocks of the districts. The State of Tripura is located between 22o 56” and 24o 32” North latitude and between 90o 09” and 92o 20” East latitude. Tripura is a landlocked State. System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of paddy cultivation is important because it needs less seed, less water, less fertilizer and less attack of pest & disease but per hectare yield gain is more than traditional method of paddy cultivation.

Due to scarcity of water and energy, the weed competition is going to be the major constraint in achieving higher production in transplanted rice. System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a six components like young seedlings transplanted at wider spacing using, use of organics, conoweeding and saturation moisture package aimed at realizing higher rice production using less inputs especially, seed, water and fertilizers.
