Intensive monoculture

Soils are a key component of agricultural productivity, and soil microbiota determine the availability of many essential plant nutrients. Agricultural domestication of soils, that is, the conversion of previously uncultivated soils to a cultivated state, is frequently accompanied by intensive monoculture, especially in the developing world.

In the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, the low-input cropping systems dominated by cereal monoculture and intensive tillage have a marked negative impact on pressure from diseases, weeds and pests resulting in decreased profit margins. The agricultural model based on mechanical soil tillage, exposed soils and continued monocropping is typically accompanied by negative effects on agriculture’s natural resource base to such an extent that future agricultural productive potential is jeopardized.

The World Agroforestry Centre has classified rubber-based systems in Indonesia according to their intensity of management, as illustrated by the photographs on the opposite page. Intensively-managed monoculture rubber plantations contain less than 1% non-rubber trees, none of which have been planted deliberately. Simple mixed rubber agroforests contain up to one-third non-rubber trees, which have been deliberately planted or retained, between five and 20 non-rubber species greater than 2 m in height and 5–20 non-rubber trees as tall as, or taller than, the rubber trees.
