Internal fixation

It is with pleasure that we offer these introductory remarks for the Manual of Internal Fixation in the Horse, a book describing a further application of AO or ASIF techniques. The letters A-O stand for the Arbeitsgemeinschaft fUr Osteosynthesefragen and have been trans lated into the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation.

This manual provides comprehensive information on the surgical techniques in internal fixation of fractures, in restoring tumour defects, and osteotomies in the craniofacial skeleton. Through detailed and instructive drawings together with clinical situations shown on x-rays it offers important guidelines for the surgeon in the operating room.

The first part of this manual deals with the experimental and scientific basis and the principles of the AOjASIF method of stable internal fixation. It deals with the function and main use of the different AO implants, the use of the different AO instruments, and with the essentials of the operative technique and of postoperative care. It also discusses the handling of the most important postoperative complications;...

This book is intended to aid course participants in their lessons and practi cal exercises and also to guide the clinical practitioner in the application of AO/ ASIF principles. Basel, September 1988 B.SPIESSL VII Acknowledgments I have received help from many sources. The colleagues of the past 20 years who have contributed to the case material upon which this manual is based are too numerous to credit by name.

This second revised and enlarged edition addresses current techniques concerned with the implementation of the AO/ASIF System in small animal orthopaedic surgery. Surgeons who have used the system over the years have now considerable knowledge and experience which they have made available in this text. The same individuals have designed and modified special implants which are now available to the Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Functionally stable internal fixation is of particular relevance to maxillo facial surgery, because it obviates the discomforts and inconveniences of intermaxillary fixation. Given the biomechanics and biophysics of the skeletal system, the true im mobilization of bone can be achieved only through highly technical means. Willenegger speaks of an "advanced school" of bone surgery which, when fully realized, will enable excellent results to be achieved even in the most difficult fractures.

Femoral neck fracture (FNF) is a common intracapsular fracture in the elderly as a result of osteoporosis, which tends to increase with humans’ extended longevity. Regarding treatment for undisplaced FNF, internal fixation is mostly used, while primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is used for older patients with displaced FNF because of the high rate of avascular necrosis and nonunion.

Internal fixation; Fracture; Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are compounds that bind to androgen receptors and have similar anabolic properties to anabolic steroids. Unlike anabolic steroids, which bind to androgen receptors in many tissues all over the body, individual SARMs selectively bind androgen receptors in certain tissues, but not in others.

Open fractures that produce an extruded long bone diaphysis, such as this case, are an exceedingly rare incident, with even fewer cases documented, leading to difficult medical decision-making for the operative management of such situations.

Right-side fixation of the sigmoid colon is a rare anatomical variant associated with intestinal malrotation (Choi et al. in J Korean Surg Soc. 84(4):256–60,2013). Differently from other forms of malrotation, this variant has not been associated thus far with acute surgical conditions.

Although the incidence of postoperative delirium (POD) in the elderly after surgery are rising as individuals are living longer, the pathogenesis of POD remains poorly understood. It has been suggested that miRNA-320 may play a role in POD based on animal study and human study.

The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is occasionally used in internal fixation of rib fractures. We evaluated the feasibility of general anesthesia with an LMA associated to a thoracic paravertebral block (TPB) and/or an erector spinae plane block (ESPB) for internal fixation of rib fractures.

The optimal treatment of Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture (FNF) in young patients remains a worldwide challenge in orthopedic surgery. Our results suggested that modified F-technique configuration show a better performance in resisting shearing and rotational forces in treating Pauwels type III FNF compared to those using traditional inverted triangular PCS, the F-technique configuration or DHS + DS, providing a new choice for the treatment of FNFs.

Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is the gold standard management of fractures of the distal humerus. Stable fixation to allow early mobilization is not always possible in cases with comminuted fracture patterns and bone loss, with a high failure rate. We propose augmentation of internal fixation in these unstable situations with a spanning plate across the elbow to protect the fixation construct temporarily until bone union.
