In his framework of functional grammar, Halliday determines three kinds of meaning: Textual, interpersonal and experiential. The experiential meaning is expressed in 6 process types: material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal, and existential. Among them, smiling belongs to behavioral processes. Smiling not only originates as part of a basic emotion process but also has significant communicative and social functions.

Appraisal Theory, which has been developed by linguists Martin & White since the 1990s, is the development of functional grammar in terms of interpersonal meaning. Based on the Appraisal Theory, this article aims to investigate the three sub-categories namely “Affect”, “Judgement” and “Appreciation” in English Speeches by Nobel Peace Prize Laureates (ESNPLs) with focus placed on identifying and describing syntactic realizations and semantic features of the three above-mentioned sub-categories in 25 ESNPLs collected from the official website of the Nobel Prize in the period 2000-2019.

This paper investigates the interpersonal meaning of English and Vietnamese letters to the Editors by using Appraisal Theory, which focuses on the interpersonal metafunction of language. The data were chosen from 100 samples of letters to the Editors. Attitude system was employed to find out the similarities and differences in construing interpersonal meaning between English letters to the Editors (ELTEs) and Vietnamese letters to the Editors (VLTEs).

This paper uses Systemic Functional Linguistics to interpret ending texts of four Cinderella versions. The interpretation compares and highlights the ways how experiential and interpersonal meanings are shaped in these texts. As a result, it reveals the similarities and differences in cultural values embedded in the fairy tales. Convincing cultural and historical explanations for contemporary controversies about the different Cinderella versions in Vietnam are also provided.

The present research study was undertaken to assess the social maturity of tribal adolescents in Adilabad district. A total sample of 120 adolescents out of which 60 boys and 60 girls in the age range of 13-19 years were selected through purposive random sampling method. This study deals with the concept of grammatical equivalence in Arabic-English translation. It investigates the problems that encounter student translators (STs) while translating grammatical constructions from Arabic into English.
