Surgical management of intestinal foreign body obstruction in Labrador retriever dog - A case report
The condition is mostly commonly seen in young playful pet animals. An eight months old Labrador retriever dog presented with the complaint of persistent vomiting and absence of defaecation was subjected to physical and radiographic examination to tentatively diagnose the condition as foreign body obstruction. The animal was subjected to exploratory laparotomy to remove the foreign body and thereby confirming the tentative diagnosis. Post operatively the patient was maintained in fluids, antibiotics and other supportive therapy for five days.

A total of 3 cross bred Holstein Friesian cows were presented to the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary Science, Tirupati with a history of blood tinged mucoid faeces, colic, anorexia and reduced ruminal motility. Out of 3 animals two were in the last trimester of pregnancy and one was in the 2nd trimester with no obstetrical abnormalities. Exploratory laparorumenotomy was done in all the three animals and the conditions were confirmed as intussusception, volvulus, and foreign-body. The conditions were corrected by enterotomy and entero-anastomosis.

This report describes the pathomorphological findings in a Labrador dog which was presented for necropsy with a history of dullness, dehydration, severe haemorrhagic enteritis, vomition and was treated privately. Post mortem examination revealed intussusception in the jejunal region while stomach was impacted with bits and pieces of foreign body consisting of comb, malleable plastic material, ropes and hair. Intestines revealed patchy haemorrhagic areas and tear in the mucosa with intact serosa and patchy haemorrhages.

c A one year old intact male Dobermann dog was brought to Small Animal Surgery Out Patient ward unit at Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with the history of acute vomition and diarrhoea for the past four days. The animal was anorectic and severely dehydrated with a congested mucous membrane. A hard-painful irregular contoured moveable mass was observed on abdominal palpation. Lateral and ventrodorsal abdominal and thoracic radiographs were taken to rule out foreign body, which revealed a radiopaque irregularly shaped foreign body at the caudal intestine.
