Human intestinal schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni and urinary schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium are endemic in Ethiopia. Although schistosomes look morphologically uniform, there is variation in infectivity, egg productivity and virulence due to variation in their genetic make.

Primary enteric-type adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder is relatively uncommon. We present our experience with 109 pure, non-urachal cases—the largest series to date. This work was undertaken with the aim of describing the immunohistochemical features of adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder associated with schistosomiasis, illustrating their histologic and immunohistochemical similarities to colorectal carcinomas.

Schistosomiasis is an endemic disease in Egypt caused by the trematode Schistosoma which has different species. c the best known form of chronic disease with a wide range of clinical manifestations. The pathogenesis of schistosomiasis is related to the host cellular immune response. This leads to granuloma formation and neo angiogenesis with subsequent periportal fibrosis manifested as portal hypertension, splenomegaly and esophageal varices. Role of different mediators was described in the development of the granulomatous response and fibrosis observed in intestinal schistosomiasis. However, both Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-jB) have not yet been investigated in intestinal schistosomiasis.
