This volume represents a collection of topics presented at the Tenth Annual Symposium of the Barrow Neurological Institute. No attempt is made to be comprehensive but rather an attempt is made to give adequate attention to the major important topics in this field. Neuro developmental biology, pathophysiology, and laboratory evaluation are discussed.

Rete mirabile of the cerebral artery is a rare anomaly, with most previous cases occurring in the middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery. Here, we present the first report of unilateral rete mirabile in multiple intracranial arteries with ipsilateral internal carotid artery agenesis.

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), accounting for about 45% of acute spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), is often associated with obstructive hydrocephalus and poor functional outcomes [1] [2]. Obstructive hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure are common after IVH because of an obstruction of normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and absorption by blood clots.

Most cases of neonatal central diabetes insipidus are caused by an injury, which often results in other handicaps in the patient. The infant’s prognosis will be determined by his or her own early age and disability as well as by the physician’s skill.

Decision Aids (DA) are well established in various fields of medicine. It can improve the quality of decision-making and reduce decisional conflict. In neonatal care, and due to scientific equipoise, neonatologists caring for extreme low birth weight (ELBW) infants are in need to elicit parents’ preferences with regard to the use of indomethacin therapy in ELBW infants.

The overall prevalence of thrombocytopenia in neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units ranges from 22 to 35%. There are only a few small studies that outline the relationship between the severity of thrombocytopenia and the risk of bleeding.

Pathogenesis of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in premature infants is multifactorial. Little is known about the impact of genetic variants in the vitamin K-dependent coagulation system on the development of IVH.

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is uncommon in term newborns. Asphyxia and hypothermia have been mentioned separately as possible risk factors of IVH, since they might cause fluctuations of cerebral blood flow.

The outcome of preterm infants has been varied in different hospitals and regions in developing countries. Regular clinical monitor are needed to know the effects of health care. This study aimed to describe the survival and morbidity rates of extreme to very preterm infants in 15 neonatal-intensive care hospitals in China.

A quality improvement initiative for delayed umbilical cord clamping in very low-birthweight infants
: Due to clinical benefits, delayed cord clamping (DCC) is recommended in infants born before 37 weeks gestational age. The objective was to institute a delayed cord clamping program and to evaluate clinical outcomes one year after initiation.

Vitamin E Deficiency: Treatment Symptomatic vitamin E deficiency should be treated with 800–1200 mg of αtocopherol per day. Patients with abetalipoproteinemia may need as much as 5000–7000 mg/d. Children with symptomatic vitamin E deficiency should be treated with 400 mg/d orally of water-miscible esters; alternatively, 2 mg/kg per d may be administered intramuscularly. Vitamin E in high doses may protect against oxygen-induced retrolental fibroplasia and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, as well as intraventricular hemorrhage of prematurity.
