Intumescent coating

In this study, the effect of nanoclay content on the fire resistance performances of intumescent coatings using ammonium polyphosphate (APP), pentaerythritol (PER), and melamine (MEL) is investigated. The epoxy and nanoclay-based intumescent coatings were developed to serve as coatings for steel substrates.

This study investigated the effect of graphene content on intumescent coating properties. Intumescent coatings contained Plextol R4152 as a binder, APP-PER-MEL as a flame retardant additive system, TiO2, Al(OH)3 as fillers, and other additive. The fire resistance test and furnace test were conducted. TGA, DSC, and SEM were used to assess the coating and char layers. The water resistance and mechanical properties of the coatings were examined.

This study presents the effects of the individual and various combinations of TiO2, Al(OH)3, and Mg(OH)2 on the fire protection performance of the epoxy-based intumescent coating. The formulations' thermal protective behaviour, residual weight, char composition, and char morphology were characterized by TGA, EDS, SEM, and FTIR techniques.
