The highly invasive agricultural insect pest Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) is the most thoroughly studied tephritid fruit fly at the genetic and molecular levels. It has become a model for the analysis of fruit fly invasions and for the development of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programmes based on the environmentally-friendly Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).

The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata, is a major destructive insect pest due to its broad host range, which includes hundreds of fruits and vegetables. It exhibits a unique ability to invade and adapt to ecological niches throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world, though medfly infestations have been prevented and controlled by the sterile insect technique (SIT) as part of integrated pest management programs (IPMs).

In modern agriculture, in view of the rapid progress in newer techniques of cultivation and availability of several options of crop management practices, reliance exclusively on chemical control for insect pest management has not yielded desired returns for the farmer. Integrated pest Management (IPM) became an effective alternative to the use of chemicals. Hence, imparting knowledge on modern technologies to the farmers has become one of the most important mandate of the extension system of India.

The mango fruit fly Bactocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephnidae) is believed to be the single most devastative pest of mango in Bihar. It accounts for about 27 per cent of harvesting loss. The flies attack semi ripe and mature fruits during the months of April and May. On Farm Trail conducted at 14 farmers plot of Kishanganj district, fly monitoring and fruit infestation estimation were recorded during the two experimental seasons 2012- 13 and 2013-14.

The result showed that two product spaces were highly similar. However, compared to IPM-QDA, IPM-RDA better improved the discriminability, increased the consensus among the assessors and reduced the variability of ideal profile. These findings indicated that ranking was more efficient than rating in gathering descriptive data using naïve consumers.

The project builds on recommendations on delivery of biocontrol options to Vietnam identified by CABI and UNEP (Jenkins and Vos, 2000. Delivery of Biocontrol Technologies to IPM Farmers: Vietnam. UNEP/CABI Critical Issues Case Studies. CAB International/UNEP publication). The activities will consist of a workshop on biopesticide selection and identification, biopesticide production and product quality control, and on application and integration into farming systems.

The aim of the proposed activity is to enhance Viet Nam’s capacity for teaching and research and development in the citrus sub-sector of agriculture. This will be achieved by the publication of reference texts and the development of high quality curricula for farmer field schools (FFS) in citrus IPM. The three Vietnamese texts will incorporate the research results of ACIAR project CS2/96/176, current information not easily accessed in Viet Nam and new information collected from throughout Viet Nam as part of the activity.

Detailed assessment of impacts of more than 50 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in 11 provinces through which over 2,000 farmers were trained from 2005 to 2006 has shown many beneficial effects. Farmers have increased knowledge and their skills in planting and protecting citrus trees and at the same time they have increase awareness of the recording and post-harvest storage, marketing and especially the changes in farming practices significantly after participating in FFS.

Cashew is an important crop in Vietnam, and the government has assigned the development as a national priority gia.Nang cashew productivity has increased since 2002, but the widespread use of drugs pesticides has caused health problems for farmers, animals and the environment. Article IPM program using ants as a key component in the development of Charles Darwin University (CDU) does not use toxic pesticides, but high-yield results. This project is using the CDU of IPM to develop and implement an IPM program that will work in conditions of Vietnam.
