Iris flower

The paper presents the morphology of the flower of Iris aphylla L., which is a protected species in many European countries. The study comprises phenological observations of flowering and assessment of nectar and pollen production, and flowering and fruiting abundance. Additionally, the number of insect visitors on the flowers was monitored. The investigations of specimens originating from 4 populations in central-eastern Poland (Wyżyna Lubelska Upland) were conducted in the Botanical Garden of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.

The present investigation was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Utlou, during 2018–2019.

In the present work, attempts have been made to analyze the Iris data set with clustering technique which is the main task of exploratory data mining and a common technique for statistical data analysis, used in many fields, including machine learning, pattern recognition, image analysis, information retrieval and bioinformatics. The Iris flower data set is a popular multivariate data set introduced by Sir Ronald Fisher as an example of discriminant analysis.

The present investigations were carried out at the research farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh during 2018 on cultivar Frigia. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design (factorial) using four levels of nitrogen i.e. 0, 15, 30 and 45 g/m2 with three plant spacing of 20 × 20 cm, 20 × 25 cm and 20 × 30 cm each being replicated thrice.

A new late flowering, reddish brown Iris L. species from the subgenus Scorpiris Spach, Iris nezahatiae Güner & H.Duman, is described and illustrated from north-east Turkey. Its distinguishing characters, affinities, and ecology are discussed and its threat category is assessed as ‘Critically endangered (CR)’.
