Iron deficiency in rice

Xem 1-13 trên 13 kết quả Iron deficiency in rice
  • Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the major food crops but is deficient in minerals such as Zn. In rice, there were eight genes belonging to the Natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (NRAMP) family, of which OsNRAMP1, OsNRAMP4, OsNRAMP5, OsNRAMP6, and OsNRAMP8 were reported to transport metals such as iron (Fe), zinc, mangan (Mn).

  • Micronutrients are not only essential for plant growth and development but are also integral to human health. Fe and Zn deficiencies cause serious nutritional problems in human beings. Increasing the micronutrient content of grain by bio-fortification offers great potential to combat micronutrient deficiency and dramatically impact human health. To find out the most suitable and profitable method of bio-fortification in aromatic rice with Zinc and Iron, a field experiment was conducted during kharif, 2019 at the Research Farm, Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, Bhagalpur.

  • Micronutrient malnutrition has reached to alarming situation with billions of people suffering from Iron, Zinc and Vitamin-A deficiencies. Micronutrient supplementation, food fortification, and biofortification are the three basic approaches used to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies. In the present study ten genotypes rich in iron were used.

  • Development of micronutrient enriched staple foods is an important breeding goal in view of the extensive problem of ‘hidden hunger’ caused by micronutrient malnutrition. Iron and zinc are micronutrients essential to the human diet but are in deficient supply to many to many in the Tropics. In an effort to this problem through genetic improvement, field trials of Rice (60 Genotypes) were conducted at Jagtial during kharif 2014 to study the Association and path analysis.

  • Micronutrient malnutrition is a serious health concern resulting due to deficiency of minerals such as iron and zinc in dietary intake. Genetic enhancement of crops with higher mineral content i.e. bio-fortification is one of the most cost effective method to solve the global mineral malnutrition problem.

  • Phosphorus (Pi) deficiency induces root morphological remodeling in plants. The primary root length of rice increased under Pi deficiency stress; however, the underlying mechanism is not well understood.

  • Zinc and Iron are essential micronutrient for both plant growth and human health but it is often reported to be deficient in regions where rice is use as staple food. Although significant progresses are made in understanding genetic and molecular mechanism of micronutrient acquisition but these need to be characterize to increase the bioavailability of these micronutrients. Biofortification is suggested to be a sustainable and costeffective approach in this perspective and for that combination of various agronomic and genetic strategies should be put in place without delay.

  • Among the micronutrients, zinc deficiency is widespread throughout the world particularly in upland rice fields causing low yields and affecting nutritional quality of the produce. Iron is also another micronutrient which is lacking in soil as well as in human body. Field studies were carried out during the growing season 2015-16 and 2016-17 at Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola (Maharashtra) to study “Influence of zinc and iron fortification on yield and Post-harvest studies of different rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.)”.

  • Though one sixth of the global population resides in India, paradoxically, one third of about two billion people are suffering from vitamin and micronutrient deficiency in India due to heavy dependence on cereals grown in Zn- deficit soils. With the hypothesis that the residual Zn present in soil can also enhance the grain Zn content, a study was conducted with wheat variety ‘HD 2329’ to assess the grain concentrations of Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe) and Phosphorus (P) grown on residual zinc in soils with divergent characteristics.

  • Iron and Zinc are the key ingredient in human nutrition, soil and crop management. Rice is the major dietary source for the population in India but it is deficient in iron and zinc. An effort was made to quantify the iron and zinc content in brown, white and cooked white rice and to study the effect of nucleotide variations in genes associated with zinc. 14 genotypes were selected and grown in field at UAS, GKVK in RCBD, during Kharif-2014. Quality parameter zinc in brown rice showed negative effect on yield.

  • Three target points in acid sulfate soils have been identified as: 1) Aluminum (Al) toxicity; 2) Iron (Fe) toxicity; 3) Phosphorous (P) deficiency; and 4) Droughts at the seedling stage. The exploitation of gene pools from wild rice species fruitfully obtained a true introgression of desirable traits into high yielding varieties (HYVs), such as AS996 (IR64/Oryza rufipogon), which are tolerant to Al-toxicity, have short durations, high yields, and adaptability to acid sulfate soils.
