It has been suggested that traits with low heritability, such as fertility, may have proportionately more genetic variation arising from non-additive effects than traits with higher heritability, such as milk yield.

The effect of heat stress is caused by high ambient temperature and high relative humidity (Kadzere et al., 2002). At high temperature several physiological changes occur in dairy cow and they attempt to facilitate heat dissipation, if they failure of homeostasis of high temperature may lead to reduce productivity or even death (Kamal et al., 2018).

Bovine mastitis contributed significantly towards antimicrobial resistance. A farmers’ participatory field trial was conducted in 100 cows of 12 dairy farms clustered in a locality of Bhubaneswar smart city, Odisha to study the preventive effect of turmeric. Cross-bred Jersey cows with 8 to 10 L milk yield per day, between 2nd to 5th lactation and one 1-2 months old calves at foot without any signs of disease/ disorder including mastitis were the criteria of selection.

Subclinical mastitis (SCM), predominantly caused by Gram positive bacteria, continues to be a global problem of dairy cows including India with negative impact on economic growth as well as public health. SCM was detected in 283 cross-bred Jersey milch cows between 2nd to 5th lactation from a milk‒shed village of Odisha on the basis of cow‒side test (Modified California Mastitis Test) and cultural examination.

Present study was based on three genetic groups viz., Jersey × Local (G1), Holstein Friesian × Local (G2) and Local (G3) cows, data collected from the field condition of Allahabad district, to determine the effect of service period, gestation period and calving interval. High estimates of heritability (above 60%) in broad sense were recorded for tall the characters under study.

A study was conducted in lactating dairy cows to evaluate the effect of wet rice distillers’ grain and soluble (WRDGS) on milk production and composition. Forty (40) lactating Jersey cows, in mid-lactation with an average live weight 350 kg and producing 8-9 kg milk daily were divided into two groups consisting of twenty animals in each group having 4 replicates with 5 animals in each.

To evaluate the bioefficacy of animal urine based formulations i.e. Cow urine collected from Desi, Holstein and Jersey breeds, Buffalo urine, Ox urine, Goat urine and Horse urine @ 20% and animal urine based neem leaf extracts @5% against Spodoptera litura and Spilarchia obliqua, laboratory experiments were conducted for the first time in Department of Entomology, GBPUAT, Pant Nagar, Uttarakhand during 2017. The growth and development studies clearly showed the efficacy of Desi cow urine, Goat Urine, Horse urine and all animal urine based neem leaf extracts against 7days old larvae of S.

A seven year old cross bred jersey presented with an ulcerated growth on the right fore teat with dribbling of milk. By ultrasonographical examination the teat diameter and thickness of the teat wall were measured. Under xylazine sedation with local analgesia the growth was excised and the defect was corrected surgically. Postoperative administration of antibiotics, analgesics were given and healing was studied using ultrasonography. Histopathological examination confirmed the condition as fibrosarcoma. The animal recovered uneventfully with apparently normal milk from the affected teat.

Electrocardiographic technique was analysed in normal dairy cows in order to evaluate the electrical activity of heart and hence to detect abnormalities like cardiac arrhythmia and electrolyte disturbances which is very common in cattle. The base apex system seems to be the best and standard lead which gives clear electrocardiographic changes. The present study was conducted on normal dairy cows with no cardiac arrhythmias or abnormal heart sounds presented to the Large Animal Unit of TVCC, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research, Puducherry.

The present study was done on eighteen cows with a history of milk flow disorders under conventional milking pattern, divided into 3 groups of 6 animals each based on the type of obstructive lesion viz; focal (TypeI), Diffuse (Type II) and membranous (Type III) respectively. Out of 18 cows 17 were crossbred jersey and one was crossbred Holstein Friesian aged between 3.5-7 years presented during 2nd -4 th lactation and maintained with calves alive and all were suckling except one. In the present study, teat obstruction was noticed predominantly on right fore teat.

Recumbent cow syndrome refers to cows that become recumbent and fail to rise. Five hundred and fifty six cows presented in recumbency to veterinary hospital, Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu during the period June 2015 to May 2019 were analyzed for incidence and aetiologies. Jersey cross bred cattle and cow in the 4 -5 years age group had highest incidence of recumbent cow syndrome. The various etiologies observed included metabolic disorders (n=186; 33.45 per cent), abdominal dysfunction (n= 132; 23.74 per cent), infectious causes (n= 42; 7.55 per cent), intoxication (n= 17; 3.

Johne’s disease (Paratuberculosis), a debilitating chronic granulomatous enteritis of domesticated and wild ruminants that causes huge economic and production losses to the dairy farmers. A six-year-old Jersey crossbred cow was presented with a history of chronic diarrhoea, gradual weight loss, reduction in milk yield and poor response to therapy. Based on history, clinical examination, ZiehlNeelsen staining and IS900 polymerase chain reaction of the faeces the case was diagnosed as Johne’s disease.

The present case reports a rare case of dystocia in a Cross bred Jersey cow due to double-headed foetus (dicephalic monster). The cattle was relieved by performing emergency caesarean section (left para-median laparohysterotomy). Based on the appearance, the retrieved calf was confirmed as dicephalus foetal monster. With good post operative care and management, the animal recovered uneventfully.
