Karst caves

Cuc Phuong is the oldest and most well-known National Park in Vietnam. With its large primary forest area and karst cave systems, it is assumed to be an ideal home to a highly diverse bat fauna. However, species diversity and echolocation of bats in this park are poorly characterized. Between April 2021 and April 2022, three bat surveys were conducted in the park with special attention on the species of the family Hipposideridae. Among the thousands of known caves of Vietnam, Tan Lap Cave is home to the largest aggregation of bats in the country. At least six species (Cynopterus sphinx, Rousettus leschenaulti, Myotis chinensis, Hipposideros pomona, Taphozous melanopogon, and Mops plicatus) inhabit the cave seasonally or all year round (Vu Dinh Thong, 2014).

Geophysical methods are effective tools for geotechnical analysis. In particular, the two-dimensional electrical resistivity method is widely applied in the determination of broken, cracked, and karst cave structures in many countries around the world. The information given by this method plays an important role in preventing and mitigating the risk of geological hazards caused by geological structures.

Na Hau Nature Reserve (NR) was established in 2006, located in Van Yen district, Yen Bai province with a total area of 16,950 hectares. The nature reserve consists of a large area of natural montane forest with the habitat is evergreen broad-leaved forests and limestone forests with karst caves.

Vertebrates use different pigmentation strategies to adapt to various environments. A large amount of research has been done on disclosing the mechanisms of pigmentation strategies in vertebrates either under light, or, living in constant darkness. However, less attention has been paid to non-obligate, darkness dwellers. Red-spotted toothed toads Oreolalax rhodostigmatus (Megophryidae; Anura) from the karst mountainous region of southwestern China are non-obligate cave dwellers.

A new population of the Son’s Bent–toed Gecko (Cyrtodactylus soni), an endemic species of Vietnam, is reported for the first time from Hoa Binh province based on three adult male specimens collected in June 2018 in a karst cave of Dong Tam commune, Lac Thuy district. The population of this species in Hoa Binh province is threatened by habitat loss through converting forest to agriculture and quarrying of limestone. Assessment of population status in the study area is urgently needed to provide baseline data for conservation measures.

The result indicates that the radon-related radiation exposure is insignificant for short-term visitors but may reach ~1.8 mSv a-1 for tour guides and ~25 mSv a-1 for cave utility workers. The latter values exceed the IAEA-recommended safety threshold of 1 mSv a-1 (IAEA, 1996). We recommend radiation monitoring for cave utility workers and tour guides. Prolonged human presence in Rong Cave should be avoided during periods of seasonally elevated radon concentrations.

Karst is a medium which has traditionally been the subject of hydrogeological re- search, given the abundant water resources that are stored in it. In many cases karst is the product of climatic and hydrological evolution in carbonate areas in recent periods of geological history. Karst contains key information on recent environmen- tal changes. The action of water has generated a great range of karstic features that are part of our natural heritage and some of them form major tourist attractions (landscapes of natural parks, geosites and show caves, for example).
