This situation may be improved to some extent if the possibilities and potentialities of growing Kharif onion are being exploited. For initiation of an effective breeding programme for hybrid development, knowledge of genetic diversity is of prime importance. Genetic variation forms the base of plant breeding and provides an array of genotypes that can be selected to develop new varieties or breeding materials.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most important commercial vegetable crop grown in India. In Karnataka, Northeastern Dry Zone is the potential area for the production of onion. The major constraints in the production of onion are diseases caused by fungi. The present investigation was undertaken to know the disease severity in Northern parts of Karnataka. A roving survey was conducted to know the percent disease severity (PDI) of purple blotch, stemphylium blight and basal rot of onion in districts of Northern parts of Karnataka during kharif 2014-15.

In Vadavathur village, small onion is cultivated in two main seasons viz., Early kharif and Rabi in an area of 425 ha with a productivity of 14 tonnes / ha. Small onion is mainly affected by dew drops during the month of November to January, where the minimum temperature falls between 12 to 140C for 17 days and caused tip drying. Presence of dew drops in tip of onion leaf sheath for a long time may lead to death of terminal leaf tissue resulted in tip drying and also reduction in yield of 0.7 to 2 tonnes / ha.

Lack of recommended or released variety of high yielding as well as good keeping quality in the country, it creates price fluctuation during off season arrival period. To meet out the domestic requirement and also to fulfil the export demand, selection of high yielding genotype under different agro climatic condition is necessary.

Field experiments were conducted during kharif 2016 and rabi 2016-17 at Research and Development farm of Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd., Udumalpet with seven treatments comprising of two irrigation (100% and 150% ETc) and three fertigation levels (75%, 100% and 125% RDF) in addition, surface irrigation method as a check for aerobic rice. For onion crop also seven treatments were setup with reducing water levels to 75% and 100% ETc from that of rice water levels by keeping same fertigation levels. The furrow irrigation was maintained as check.
