An investigation was done to estimate magnitude of heterosis in sixty six hybrids (F1’s) of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) with respect to yield and its associated components using six newly developed (CGMS) lines and eleven testers. The resulted 66 hybrids and their 17 parents along with two standard checks (CSH 14 – for earliness and CSH 35 – for yield) were evaluated to assess magnitude of heterosis, heterobeltiosis and economic heterosis by using line × tester analysis at Sorghum Research Unit, Dr. P.D.K.V. Akola 444 001, Maharashtra during Kharif 2015-16.

The present study was conducted on 25 sorghum genotypes grown in Randomized Block Design during Kharif 2015 to evaluate, categorize and classify them for fodder yield and quality traits. Observations were recorded on eighteen variables involving morphological, quality. Wide range of variation, high coefficient of variation, were recorded for number of leaves per plant, green fodder yield, dry fodder yield and DDM, therefore it revealed the possibility of their further improvement. The mean squares due to genotypes were recorded highly significant for all the 18 characters studied.

This study was performed at Instructional dairy farm, Govind Ballabh Pant University of agriculture and technology during Kharif season, 2017 to evaluate and characterize 96 sorghum accessions for various morphological and fodder yield parameters. Highest Shannon index was recorded for races (1.47) followed by glume color (1.33), ear head compactness (1.176) and glume covering (1.117) revealed the greater variability for these qualitative traits. The results of this study indicate that significant genetic diversity exists among the sorghum accessions.

Sorghum shoot fly [Atherigona soccata (Rondani)] is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum. It is important to understand the nature of gene action to breed for resistance to the target insect pest. In the present study, a population of 259 sorghum recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from cross 296B (shoot fly susceptible) x IS 18551 (shoot fly resistant) were evaluated in shoot fly screening nursery to study the inheritance of shoot fly resistance. Variances due to RIL genotypes (G), screening environment (E) and G x E interactions were significant for the traits studied.
