  • Germinal center-derived B cell lymphomas are tumors of the lymphoid tissues representing one of the most heterogeneous malignancies. Here we characterize the variety of transcriptomic phenotypes of this disease based on 873 biopsy specimens collected in the German Cancer Aid MMML (Molecular Mechanisms in Malignant Lymphoma) consortium.

  • Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) classically presents as acute kidney injury most often induced by offending drugs. Less frequently it is secondary to infections, autoimmune disorders, or idiopathic conditions. Development of drug-related AIN is not dose dependent and a recurrence can occur with re-exposure to the drug.

  • Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV), formerly Henoch–Schonlein purpura vasculitis, is a vasculitis commonly seen in children and ¨ only rarely described in adult patients. IgAV can present as arthralgia, rash, discolored urine, acute kidney injury, and gastrointestinal symptoms. We present a case of a 56-year-old man who presented with 1 month of worsening abdominal pain followed by a bilateral lower extremity rash. Laboratory evaluation indicated an acute kidney injury. Computed tomography and colonoscopy revealed terminal ileitis while kidney biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of IgAV.

  • Impaired vitamin D metabolism may contribute to the development and progression of chronic kidney disease. The purpose of this study was to determine associations of circulating vitamin D with the degree of proteinuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients with biopsy-proven glomerular diseases.

  • Lupus nephritis (LN) carries high morbidity and mortality and whenever added to neuropsychiatric manifestations lead to more unfavorable prognosis. Though silent brain MRI findings in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) had been widely studied, the current work focused on LN patients comparing them to those without kidney affection, studying their cerebral MRI and its correlation with the histopathological classes of LN and disease activity. This may enable us to know more about early brain affection in LN patients for better follow up, management, and prognosis of this serious comorbidity.

  • It has been shown that under dehydration the function of camel kidneys is depressed, including a reduction in glomerular filtration rate from about 60 ml/100kg/min to 15 ml/100kg/min. When camels are allowed to drink immediately to satiation, the kidney function rapidly returns to normal. Within half an hour there is a significant increase in the urine flow rate, glomerular filtration rate and in kidney plasma flow, which are accompanied by significant decreases in plasma and urine osmolarities. ...

  • There are in principle two tests that may be used in mass screening, PSA (prostate specific antigen) and DRE (digital rectal examination). The PSA test is simple, cheap, safe and acceptable. However the prostatic biopsy, required to investigate positive results, is less acceptable and carries significant risks. The accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of the PSA test is difficult to determine (4). There is no good standard against which to test it, since prostatic biopsy may itself miss 10% to 30% of cases.

  • The majority of children with glomerulonephritis (GN) present with proteinuria, hematuria, hypertension, edema, reduced renal function, or the nephrotic syndrome. Post- streptococcal acute GN is familiar to the practicing pedi- atrician. Most affected children have a benign course and can be easily treated by the primary care physician on an ambulatory basis. Obviously, a nephrology consultation should be obtained on patients with oliguria, hyperkalemia, nephrotic syndrome, cardiac overload, and renal insuffi- ciency.

  • Several effects have already been shown in animals. Among these, toxic effects have been identified in several organs (heart, lungs, kidneys, reproductive system…), as well as genotoxicity and cytotoxicity. For example, some particles cause granulomas, fibrosis and tumoural reactions in the lungs. Thus, titanium dioxide, a substance recognized as having low toxicity, shows high pulmonary toxicity on the nano-scale in some studies and no or almost no effects in other studies.
