Knapsack sprayer

Manual harvesting of paddy is more time consuming and has become a costly operation. Hence there is a need for mechanization of harvesting, at present the available machinery for harvesting are large in size and expensive and are not reaching the small scale farmers. The rotary type cutting mechanism has been developed with the proper transmission system by using the knapsack power sprayer engine as a prime source.

Farming comprises of land preparation, sowing, plant protection, harvesting and post harvesting. The power source of farm machinery in every aspect is an engine, which is the costliest one in relation with the remaining parts of that machinery. If we could use the same source of power for different aspects, investment could be benefitted with multipurpose operations. Most of the farmers own some frequently required equipment like sprayer for fertigation.

Traditionally the hand lever operated knapsack sprayer was used by the Indian farmers for spraying of pesticide, weedicide, fungicides, liquid chemicals etc. however it involves fatigue due to continuous hand lever operation results in the low efficiency. Now a days the power operated knapsack sprayers available in the market are being used for spraying operation in production agriculture but it is associated with more vibrations, noise levels causes the high level of fatigue during the operation hence labors are reluctant to use this types of sprayer.

Performance evaluation of commercially available hydraulic energy nozzles (HCN/PB, HCN/PC, HCN/PD and HCN/PE) used in manually operated sprayer was conducted to identify the suitable nozzle for low velocity air-assisted sprayer. The discharge rate, droplet size, droplet size distribution pattern and spray distribution pattern of all the types of nozzles were measured with a pressure range of 0.1 to 0.4 MPa at an interval of 0.1 MPa. The experiment was carried out during kharif 2014 at College of Agriculture, Indore under All India Coordinated Cotton Improvement Project in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with eight treatments and three replications on Bt cotton hybrid NCS 927, sown on 27th July with 0.6x0.6 m spacing. The recommended agronomical practices were adopted properly. Each treatment was prepared for alternate use of two insecticides during six sprays. The spraying was done at 10 days interval with 500 litre water per hectare, sprayed by knapsack sprayer fitted with a duromist nozzle.
