KVK activities on production

The trails were conducted on cash crops i.e. sugarcane and cotton. In cotton integrated weed control and in sugarcane Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI) technology was popularized among farmers. Horticultural crops covered under study were onion and pomegranate. In the same way in onion crop to reduce the cost of cultivation integrated weed management and in pomegranate to protect the fruits from sun scorching PP Non woven bag technology was demonstrated at farmer’s field.

Onion [Allium cepa L.] is one of the most important commercial vegetable crops of Chitradurga district. It is mainly grown by small and marginal farmers. It is mainly grown for commercial bulb production during Kharif. Very less number of farmers goes for seed production during Rabi season with local varieties. This new extension approaches may help to farmers for technical interventions on seed production and self-reliance for quality seeds in district.

In the findings it was found that the Krishi Vigyan Kendras are functional carrying out extension activities in accordance with government programme schedule and proving support to raise the skill of the farmers which will help them to increase their productivity. Highest adoption at KVKs was found by the KVK of Shahjahanpur, may be due to better and adequate infrastructure and other facilities.

Malda KVK has started it activities on NICRA (National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture) from 2010-11. Under Manikchak block, 6 villages were purposively selected for implementation of the NICRA project based on the effect of flood in the area. A study was undertaken to assess the impact of different climate resilient technologies based on production, income and BC ratio.

A field experiment was conducted at KVK, Kalburgi, on black soils. The zero tillage practices were followed since 3 years in five main plots and different reduced nutrient levels were imposed as subplots, by following split plot design. Every year same crop pigeonpea genotype TS-3R was grown. The prophylactic measures were undertaken against pests and diseases. Biological observations were analysed at 50 per cent flowering.

According to the 2011 census of India, women constitute half of the total population. Participation of women in economic activities is now emerging as a universal phenomenon. Advancement of information and communication technologies created many opportunities for the development of talents of women in entrepreneurship activities.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, a planned scheme of Indian Council of Agricultural Research plays vital role by organizing various mandatory programmes to the women for their empowerment in respect of knowledge and adoption of technology for the augmentation of crop production, food security, livelihood security, etc. KVK emphasizes on women empowerment through formation and functioning of SHG and providing training on entrepreneurial training which helps them to develop self confidence, attitude, motivation, economic independence, decision making, leadership, social mobility, etc.
