We present C*ST*RD, a cross-language information delivery system that supports cross-language information retrieval, information space visualization and navigation, machine translation, and text summarization of single documents and clusters of documents. C*ST*RD was assembled and trained within one month, in the context of DARPA's Surprise Language Exercise, that selected as source a heretofore unstudied language, Hindi. Given the brief time, we could not create deep Hindi capabilities for all the modules, but instead experimented with combining....

Current research in automatic subjectivity analysis deals with various kinds of subjective statements involving human attitudes and emotions. While all of them are related to subjectivity, these statements usually touch on multiple dimensions such as non-objectivity1 , uncertainty, vagueness, non-objective measurability, imprecision, and ambiguity, which are inherently different. This paper discusses the differences and relations of six dimensions of subjectivity. Conceptual and linguistic characteristics of each dimension will be demonstrated under different contexts. ...

Program correctness guarantees correct results for all valid input. But what happens when the input is invalid? Another important criterion of program reliability is the robustness, which measures how well the program runs under various conditions. In this chapter, we will describe how to code this exception-handling mechanism in Java to improve the program’s robustness.

Due to the growth of computer technologies and web technologies, we can easily collect and store large amounts of text data. We can believe that the data include useful knowledge. Text mining techniques have been studied aggressively in order to extract the knowledge from the data since late 1990s. Even if many important techniques have been developed, the text mining research field continues to expand for the needs arising from various application fields. This book is composed of 9 chapters introducing advanced text mining techniques.

The principle underlying the development of the ACT derives from the work of E. F. Lindquist (1901–1978). Lindquist, a pioneer in educational measurement and a cofounder of ACT, devoted much of his professional life to demonstrating that the best way to gauge students’ readiness for college is to measure as directly as possible their mastery of the knowledge and skills required for success in college studies. The tests of educational development in the ACT measure a broad range of educationally significant knowledge and skills.

Research on the text generation task has led to creation of a large systemic grammar of English, Nigel, which is embedded in a computer program. The grammar and the systemic framework have been extended by addition of a semantic stratum. The grammar generates sentences and other units under several kinds of experimental control. This paper describes augmentations of various precedents in the systemic framework. The emphasis is on developments which control the text to fulfill a purpose, and on characteristics which make Nigel relatively easy to embed in a larger experimental program. ...

Improving both the efficiency of water uses and water productivity in irrigation require appropriate solutions for design, management and maintenance of irrigation systems. Various software tools proved useful for designing new systems and to improve functioning and management of systems under operation. In this complex context, it is important that farmers could rely on instruments and practices that enable a better management of water at the field scale, whatever the irrigation method they adopt.

Today, the term reliability is part of our everyday language, especially when speaking about the functionality of a product. A very reliable product is a product that fulfils its function at all times and under all operating conditions. The technical definition for reliability differs only slightly by expanding this common definition by probability: reliability is the probability that a product does not fail under given functional und environmental conditions during a defined period of time (VDI guidelines 4001).

The following pages contain nothing new and nothing original, but they do contain a good deal of information gathered from various sources, and brought together under one cover. The book itself may be useful, not, perhaps, to the Professor or to the Orientalist, but to the general reader, and to the student commencing the study of Arabic. To the latter it will give some idea of the vast field of Arabian literature that lies before him, and prepare him, perhaps, for working out a really interesting work upon the subject.

Chapter 10 - Storage and file structure. In this chapter, we probe below the higher levels as we describe various methods for implementing the data models and languages presented in preceding chapters. We start with characteristics of the underlying storage media, such as disk and tape systems. We then define various data structures that allow fast access to data.
