The present study was undertaken to assess status of Large Cardamom (Amomum subulatum) among major crops in Sikkim. The study was measured based on area, production and productivity including cumulative annual exponential growth rate (CAEGR) over a time period from 2003-2015.

Large Cardamom is common cultivated spice crop in Nepal as well as in India and Bhutan. Large Cardamom is prone to many diseases, among them viral diseases are annihilative which causes sententious yield loss. Field surveys were conducted during different seasons of 2016-17. Chirke is serious as far as rate of spread is concerned and Foorkey is serious as far as yield loss is concerned. Chirke is caused by Large Cardamom Chirke Virus (LCCV), a new virus species under the genus Macluravirus, family Potyviridae and is characterized by mosaic with pale streak on the leaves.

Large or Black cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.) is commercially cultivated in Nepal and India. As many as 25 diseases have been reported till date. Based on severity, spread and extent of damage, these are grouped as major and minor disease occurring in main plantation and in nursery. The plant is prone to several diseases among which fungal and viral diseases cause significant loss to yield. The fungal diseases are prevalent from the nursery to plantation field.
