Largely across regions

The majority of clinical genetic testing focuses almost exclusively on regions of the genome that directly encode proteins. The important role of variants in non-coding regions in penetrant disease is, however, increasingly being demonstrated, and the use of whole genome sequencing in clinical diagnostic settings is rising across a large range of genetic disorders.

Community health systems operating in remote areas require accurate information about where people live to efficiently provide services across large regions. We sought to determine whether a machine learning analyses of satellite imagery can be used to map remote communities to facilitate service delivery and planning.

The domestic turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is an important agricultural species that is largely used as a meat-type bird. Characterizing genetic variation in populations of domesticated species and associating these variation patterns with the evolution, domestication, and selective breeding is critical for understanding the dynamics of genomic change in these species.

: Spatiotemporal changes in the chromatin accessibility landscape are essential to cell differentiation, development, health, and disease. The quest of identifying regulatory elements in open chromatin regions across different tissues and developmental stages is led by large international collaborative efforts mostly focusing on model organisms, such as ENCODE.

Spilomyia manicata (Rondani, 1865) is reported as a new genus and species record from India and the Oriental region. A brief diagnosis, images, and comparison with allied species are provided to scientifically validate this new faunal record from the Indian subcontinent and to facilitate its prompt identification. The species shows rare distribution across its range, and various factors pose a threat to the existence of this large pollinator species. Therefore, the documentation of this species assumes significance for devising conservation strategies and sustainable management.

Complex signatures of genomic variation of two non-model marine species in a homogeneous environment
Genomic tools are increasingly being used on non-model organisms to provide insights into population structure and variability, including signals of selection. However, most studies are carried out in regions with distinct environmental gradients or across large geographical areas, in which local adaptation is expected to occur. Therefore, the focus of this study is to characterize genomic variation and selective signals over short geographic areas within a largely homogeneous region.

Olfactory receptor (OR) genes are the largest multi-gene family in the mammalian genome, with 874 in human and 1483 loci in mouse (including pseudogenes). The expansion of the OR gene repertoire has occurred through numerous duplication events followed by diversification, resulting in a large number of highly similar paralogous genes.

Traditional medicinal system utilizes a huge scale of plants which are largely angiosperms. The high altitude cold deserts of the Indian Himalayas sustain a considerable amount of specialized vegetation, which is widely scattered across different habitats. The cold desert covers land area of 186,200 square km spread over region of the Himalayas. These desert covers about 20% of total land of earth, but the pattern of precipitation and altitude of cold desert specifically supports a unique biome.

Over the years, agriculture across the world has been compromised by a succession of devastating epidemics caused by evolving viruses that spilled over from reservoir species or by new variants of classic viruses that acquired new virulence factors or changed their epidemiological patterns. Population genetics can be used as a powerful tool for identification of disease dynamics over population across large-scale geographic regions. Knowledge of life-history and origin of pathogen can greatly benefit from emergence and expansion of spatial genetics.

Millets are in the family of cereals grown globally with differential importance across continents and within regions of the world. Cereals are staple foods for a large proportion of the world population. The present investigation was carried out to find out the effect of different retail packaging material on the shelf-life of dehusked foxtail millet. The foxtail millet was procured at local Raichur market. Physical properties of dehusked foxtail millet viz., particle density, bulk density, angle of repose, coefficient of internal friction...

The term "nation" cannot have a general and universal definition. It is an overarching umbrella term. Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children is from the beginning doubtful of the view of the modern nation. The novel presents an alternative concept of the nation, the Islamic umma. Viewed from a broader perspective, a nation is like somewhat mixed both ethnocultural and civic category. To come up with one definition under which all nationalities fit is impossible.

Palaeozoic rocks crop out across large areas in the İstanbul region. The Palaeozoic sequence starts with the Lower Ordovician fluviatile and lacustrine deposits (Kocatöngel and Kurtköy formations). The area was transgressed by the sea during the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian, represented by the feldspathic quartzwacke and quartz-arenites of the Kınalıada and Aydos formations.

Their hardened hooves and lighter bones enable them to endure long migrations. These adaptive attributes have facilitated their importation and spread by Indian and Arabian merchants across the Red Sea to the drier agro-ecological regions of the Horn of Africa (Loftus and Cunningham 2000). The Large East African Zebu cattle breeds, like the present-day Boran of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, and the Butana and Kenana of the Sudan have very similar morphological characteristics to that of the zebu breeds of Asia. They are maintained by mainly pastoral communities in the Horn of Africa....

Roger Eugene Maras (he changed his name to Maris in 1955) was born on September 10, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota, a small mining town in the northeast region of the state. People once called Hibbing the “Iron Capital of the World” because of the large amounts of iron ore discovered there. Roger’s ancestors came to Hibbing in the early 1900s from Croatia, which is east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea. Around 1910, Roger’s grandfather, Steve Maras, left Croatia for the United States. Once in Hibbing, Steve worked for his brother, who had already come from Croatia, at a saloon.

This illustrates that such units often emerged in response to policies or market failures related to availability of infrastructure, technology, and property rights.

The first of these contextual factors, the three meta-narratives, show a degree of systematic macro-scale variation across Europe, and can therefore be described within the framework of the EDORA typologies. The second (assets and capacity) varies in a more unsystematic way across Europe. Its impact can therefore only be adequately assessed through some form of local or regional audit, as part of a neo-endogenous process for specifying intervention “mixes” at a region level.

We propose a latent variable model to enhance historical analysis of large corpora. This work extends prior work in topic modelling by incorporating metadata, and the interactions between the components in metadata, in a general way. To test this, we collect a corpus of slavery-related United States property law judgements sampled from the years 1730 to 1866. We study the language use in these legal cases, with a special focus on shifts in opinions on controversial topics across different regions....

In this paper, we study the problem of complex event detection (CED) in a monitoring environment that consists of potentially a large number of distributed event sources (e.g., hardware sensors or software receptors). CED is becoming a fundamental capability in many domains including network and infrastructure security (e.g., denial of service attacks and intrusion detection [22]) and phenomenon and activity tracking (e.g., fire detection, storm detection, tracking suspicious behavior [23]).

This problem is evident, for example, in ongoing efforts to replace the functionally obsolete Brent Spence Bridge that connects Cincinnati, Ohio, with Covington, Kentucky, carrying traffic from two large interstate highways across the Ohio River. Despite its critical importance to regional commerce and the economic vitality of both cities, project planners have not been able to find a funding source for the $2.4 billion needed to begin work.
