Larger benthic foraminifera

North of İstanbul, the thick Upper Cretaceous volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of the Yemişliçay Group is nonconformably overlain by the neritic clastic and carbonate sequence of the Zekeriyaköy Formation. This unit, either placed within the volcanic sequence or interpreted to overlie it, was studied near Zekeriyaköy for its larger foraminifera, previously recurrently referred to as the Maastrichtian. The basal epiclastic sandstone beds of the Zekeriyaköy Formation immediately above the volcanic sequence contain Praesiderolites dordoniensis and rare rudist shells.

Rogerella aydimi Gallardo-Garcia and Serra-Kiel was described from the Priabonian Haluf Member of the Aydim Formation, Oman. Based on new finds from the Bartonian Hoya Formation of SE Turkey and the Jahrum Formation of Iran, its taxonomic status is discussed herein. It is concluded that it represents a species of Dictyoconus with a simple subepidermal network (1 rafter, 1 intercalary beam) below a thin epiderm. The stratigraphic range of D. aydimi known thus far is Bartonian-Priabonian or Shallow Benthic Zone 17– 20. The distribution of D.

The middle-upper Eocene Kırkgeçit Formation, the fossil content of which is the subject of this study, is deposited in a back-arc basin controlled by block-faulting. The Kırkgeçit basin is interpreted as being formed under an extensional regime related to convergence between the Anatolian plate in the north and the Arabian plate in the south.

The Ypresian to Priabonian Gubs river section, in the Adygean high of the northern slope of the Caucasus, is a rare locality, in which Ypresian–Lutetian representative larger benthic foraminifera coexist with planktonic Foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton.

The shallow-marine Eocene Soğucak Limestone and Oligocene Ceylan Formation were studied in the northern and eastern parts of the Thrace Basin with detailed biometric analysis of the full spectrum of larger benthic foraminifera (mainly nummulitids and orthophragmines).

The marine strata of the Qom Formation south of Uromieh (Baranduz) yielded a moderately diverse larger benthic foraminiferal fauna resembling the fauna already described from European marine sequences. The fauna allowed the author to correlate the larger foraminiferal assemblage of northwestern Iran with the standard shallow benthic zonation.

This work demonstrates the potential of three-dimensional biometric quantification using microtomography on larger benthic foraminifera. We compare traditional linear and area measures used for calculating three-dimensional characters with actual 3D measurements made from volume images obtained using X-ray microtomography (microCT).

The Oligocene-Miocene Asmari Formation was deposited in a carbonate ramp setting at the margin of the Zagros Basin in south-western Iran. The subsurface sedimentary successions of the Asmari Formation have been studied using cores from the Rag-eSafid oil field, in order to determinate their microfacies and sedimentary palaeoenvironments.

The distribution of selected shallow-benthic biota at circum-Tethyan carbonate platforms demonstrates an excellent proxy for the impact of latitudinally controlled cooling and variations in the trophic resources during the Palaeogene. In this study, we link and compare the spatial distribution and abundance of larger benthic foraminifera and hermatypic corals of Tethyan carbonate successions with new records from the Prebetic platform in SE Spain.

The Eocene marine sequence in the southern part of the Thrace Basin (NW Turkey) involves a variety of platform and deep-marine olistostromal units, the stratigraphy of which have been vigorously debated in the past. A detailed analysis of larger foraminifera in these either foraminifera or foraminifera-coral-coralline algae-dominated platform and associated comparatively deeper-marine units permits us to establish a high-resolution biostratigraphy in the context of shallow benthic zonation (with SBZ zones) of Tethyan Paleogene.
