Microstructural, optical, AC dielectric impedance, and conductivity properties of pure PVA and PVA: NaSe SCF samples doped with various NaSe salt fillers were investigated. The XRD study confirmed the semicrystalline structure of the PolVA:NaSe SCF samples which explicated the semi-crystalline nature of the pure PolVA as a matrix.

Forty-two ditch cutting samples of the KR-1 offshore well from depths of 9660 ft to 10,920 ft composited at 90-ft intervals were subjected to sedimentological, micropaleontological, and geochemical analyses using standard procedures and the laser ablationinduced coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique, respectively. Sedimentological analysis revealed the presence of glauconites and the rare occurrence of framboidal pyrites, indicative of deposition in a slightly anoxic marine environment.

This study aims to improve the reliability of laser cutting for such work and indicates guidelines to optimize the cutting procedure, in particular, nozzle combinations (standoff distance and focus position), to minimize waste material. The results obtained show the performance levels that can be reached with 10 kW fiber lasers, using which it is possible to obtain narrower kerfs than those found in published results obtained with other lasers. Nonetheless, fiber lasers appear to show the same effects as those of CO2 and ND:YAG lasers.

We present the design and development of folded four-mirror resonators for diode end-pumped solid-state Cr:LiSAF lasers. The astigmatic effects due to the Brewster-cut laser crystal and two curved mirrors used at oblique incidence were taken into consideration. The obtained results showed the stability regions of resonator, the beam parameters in the resonator and within the laser crystal as well as other sensitive parameters and their variation ranges. Furthermore, the designed folded four-mirror resonators for diode end-pumped Cr:LiSAF laser were experimentally evaluated.

We describe two projects that explore this territory of easy-to-use domain-oriented tools that help naïve users design three-dimensional models. Using the Furniture Factory users sketch, model, and produce a class of furniture models. The Designosaur enables its users to make models of dinosaurs, both real and imaginary. Both projects enable users to begin by sketching a design and both employ a laser cutter as the output medium, to cut model materials from flat material such as wood or plastic sheets.

Several techniques for fabrication of through-wafer vias in silicon have been compared in terms of achievable via diameter, shape and geometry and their influence on mechanical strength of silicon dies/wafers. Assessed techniques are: powder blasting, laser melt cutting, laser ablation, and deep reactive ion etching. The resolution of each method and influence on geometry was evaluated by fabrication through-wafer holes and slots in 240µm-thick silicon wafers. The mechanical strength is measured using ring-on-ring (RoR) and four-point bending methods.

I like playing around with words and letters. You probably know that LASER is an artificial word derived from “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. When starting my lecture on “Laser–Tissue Interactions” I tend to write this derivation on the board. I continue with “LIGHT: Lasers Irradiate Germinated and Healthy Tissues”. Why? Lasers cut everything, if appropriate laser parameters are selected. There is no shield around healthy tissue. And there is no laser that fits all sizes as some clothes do. Lasers never have been some kind of wonder instruments.
