The present study aims at evaluating the efficacy of two rapid tools, IgM dot ELISA and Latex Agglutination Test employing recombinant LipL32 as antigen in diagnosing acute leptospirosis in dogs in Kerala, a disease endemic area. The production of natural latex is limited, and the related demand for terrestrial transportation has increased. The synthesis of rubber has become necessary and the resulting synthetics’ properties must be known. Thermooxidative degradation of synthetic rubbers 1,4- and 1,2-polybutadienes caused by heating the compounds at 100°C in the air, was monitored. The volatile compounds released during the degradation were identified using coupled modern physical methods, including NMR, TGA, MS, FTIR, etc.. Thermal gravimetric analysis showed that oxidation occurred for both 1,4 and 1,2-PB.

The results showed that in the presence of ethanol, the nitrogen content decreased from 0.38 wt.% to approximately 0.07 wt.% after two times of centrifugation. The rubber glove made from the LPNR latex contains the lowest nitrogen content among various commercial rubber gloves.

Another method for the detection of live trypanosomes in blood is by the use of ion exchange columns. The ion exchange gel is packed into plastic syringe bodies and the trypanosomes are collected in sealed Pasteur pipettes. After centrifugation, the pipette tip while immersed in a very shallow water bath, is examined with a 20 X objective. Trypanosomes may be seen undulating in the fluid within the pipette tip. The method is claimed 98% accurate, but requires more apparatus, preparation and skill development time.

Until the early 1990’s latex production has been the main objective for rubberwood cultivation in Thailand. In 1989 the Thai government established a national natural forests logging ban. This law raised an immediate demand for construction and furniture wood in Thailand. Previously, the rubberwood trunks left over after the latex production, were either used as firewood at the plantation site or in charcoal production. Rubberwood offers qualities to ease off the demand for natural tropical forest trees and this way helps to decrease the pressure on illegal logging.

Rubber production on small-scale farming systems in Thailand is a secured way for farmers to gain constant income for their livelihood. Besides, rubberwood farming systems are easy to maintain because silviculture costs are mainly present at the preparation and planting stages.
